Plane in South bend on Oct 24

Contract less than Mel tuckers

Riley getting $2m more than BK while having the same agent

All point to this being agreed upon a month ago

If that was desperation, it worked out very well. Their records are nearly identical.

USC fired Helton before we fired O. I wouldn't be surprised if USC beat us to the punch with Riley, considering Riley's actions lead us to believe he has been preparing for the move to L.A. for quite some time now. I can imagine Woodward learned that Riley was open to leaving OU and reached out to inquire, and then Riley's camp let him know that they were already leaving for USC for a bungload of money.

This next part is getting into some tinfoil hat conspiracy stuff, but is there a possibility that Riley's agent and Woodward agreed to put the smokescreen out there that Riley to LSU was in the works, to draw attention away from Riley actually going to USC and also shift attention away from who Woody was really targeting which ended up being Kelly?

This is an SEC rant level thread. You should go back over there.

It's obvious to me that Woodward was evaluating several high-value HC prospects simultaneously. The agents for Jimbo, Kelly, and Riley were surely contacted. Perhaps Petersen's and Saban's, too, as well as a few NFL guys. I don't know if Napier's or Aranda's agents were contacted. I would not be surprised if this were a constant process for Woodward - maintaining relationships with various coaches and their agents, testing the waters, etc. In other words, he is a consummate professional. He does not allow himself to be put in a position of desperation.

It is absurd to suggest, like many in the media are doing, that Woodward was caught flat-footed by Riley's announcement and then "desperately" hired away from Notre Dame a top-5 coach. If he did, how is that not incredibly impressive in its own right, yet somehow the way this played out is supposed to reflect negatively on LSU.

BK is a great hire, don't get me wrong,

These two sentences make no fricking sense in succession of each other

The answer is no. And even if the answer was yes, the second sentence in your posts shows that it wouldn’t fricking matter

Whatever place he was on our list has no application to his ability to coach and win championships here

The timeline with SC really doesn’t matter much. It’s the firing of Ed that matters. I’m sure that SW had a good feeling for getting BK before he fired Ed. Then he just had to dot the I’s and cross the T’s. The rest was the waiting game.

SW said he was going after a whale and that is BK, not Riley. Riley may be a shark, or better yet a snake, but not a whale.

And the smoke with Riley was his agent getting his price up with USC.

I’m sure SW talked with several agents and had a #2 man on backup, but it wasn’t needed. He’s didn’t close any doors until he had BK fully committed. And he couldn’t announce anything due to ND having a shot at the playoffs.

The beautiful thing about all the smoke and everyone buying into it is pointed out in a quote attributed to Twain. “It’s Easier To Fool People Than To Convince Them That They’ve Been Fooled”.

Except LR is on record as only having conversations with USC and no other schools.

LSU never approached LR.

It was a desperation hire. BK was desperate to leave ND too. No way you hire a 60 year old with no rings and then overpay him without being desperate.

BK was his #1
Why then did Kelly tell Dan Patrick that this thing was a "whirlwind" and he hadn't time to make any arrangements prior to coming to be introduced in BR?

Pure desperation, hiring a HC with 7 ten win seasons, 5 in a row, currently the 3rd highest winningest coach in the country.

Only desperate people say stuff like this, and soon you'll be desperate.

Because he just left a team who could potentially make the playoffs and also a NC game run? I'd say that's a whirlwind for sure to uproot so fast and abandon your players. The timing was bad but he didn't have much choice because LSU wanted to get moving on the recruiting end. He probably realized he needed to get started on his future and probably wanted to finish coaching out. That was too long for LSU. They may not have landed him if playoffs were a definite thing who knows.
