The irony in this hire: the ULM job simply pays too much money for a McNeese coach to pass up...

Yea I had to chuckle at that as well

Its part of the retirement plan for a coach that is successful at McNeese (See Bobby Keasler). Log a bunch of years in the retirement system at McNeese, and then go ratchet up those top 3 years to set the baseline amount at ULM...

Good for Matt V.
Personally glad he's gone from McNeese, but I wish him well.

is this a good hire for ULM?

The fact they found a coach that took the job and he got a raise makes it a good hire.

You never know how good a hire is until after a couple seasons, but on paper it looks to be good. From what I have noticed about Viator is that he recruits local so I'm hoping that transitions to how he recruits at ULM.

I think it's a good hire for ULM. Viator is very professional, knows how to talk to big money boosters, and is a very business-minded person. Will definitely recruit locally and should see an improving trend over the next few years. If he can get a good QB for his system he will be successful.
I'm already hearing Mike Collins as DC and maybe Rob Sale will rejoin him from Georgia. But Sale may be able to stay in a Power 5 conference.

I think it is a darn good hire for ULM. Surprised he did not get a look at other positions locally before

good for both parties
hes a great guy but IMO its time for a culture change at mcneese
i expect Guidry or Lance Collins or Scott Stoker to get the job
congrats to Viator

I hope they increase the recruiting budget to more than an embarrassing/pathetic/poverty amount of 36K. Even Saban would have trouble dealing with that.

Guidry would be a huge culture change and for the better.

And everyone else in the running would have had to take a pay cut.

It's a good decision for both schools. ULM gets there coach. Viator felt the heat on him at McNeese. There were plenty of big wig boosters at McNeese that wanted Viator gone because he has a little CLM in him. He's a great regular season coach and a horrible post season coach. I think the feeling was mutual on both parts. It would have been very hard on McNeese to explain why they parted ways with a coach that just produced an undefeated regular season.
