quote:

UH athletic director Hunter Yurachek said Tuesday that he's had "very general conversations" with top school officials about parameters on a new extended contract for football coach Tom Herman.

quote:

Earlier Tuesday during an appearance on the Nate & Creight Show on 1560 AM, Yurachek said the university has to "be reasonable" with Herman, who received a salary bump to $3 million last December, but also want to send a message that they will do everything to keep the sought-after second-year coach

quote:

There have been no talks with Herman or his agent, Yurachek said. Yurachek added that he has discussed parameters with school president Renu Khator and board of regents chairman Tilman Fertitta.

UH obviously trying to be proactive but would still be hard to imagine him staying

Houston can try whatever but he's not staying.

Houston's 40K stadium does not produce near enough revenue to keep paying Herman AND his staff the money necessary to compete with the big boys. Paying him anywhere near $5M leaves nothing left to keep his staff together, which was the main reason Bret left Whisky; he kept losing his staff every yr.

Good luck.

LSU can pay him $5M a year and still have $3M left over to pay assistants / coordinators.

This doesn't look good for a school that has had to put up 20 million a year for athletics because they don't generate any income.

Heard from a Top 50 booster that when herman was in initial discussions with U of H 2 years ago, he wanted a stipulation that the stadium had to be X% full. Said that if they cant fill a 40k stadium, they're not a big time program. Stipulation ended up not being included, but that should tell you all you need to know about how he feels. that thing's been empty all year

Stats say their lowest attended game was last week at 38,000. Hardly empty.

They will have to pay him 10 MM per to stay. The guy has a blank check right now.

that's nice and all and I certainly agree he won't stay at Cougar High, but the lowest paid coach in the SECW is $4.1m (Mullen). If you won't pay at least that much, you end up hiring Will Muschamp.

The price for coaches is way up and $5m isn't really much in a bid war. FFS, Houston is G5 and they are currently paying him $3m and are at least verbally suggesting they will go a decent amount higher.

If LSU is only able to offer 5/3, they aren't going to win this bidding war (and Aranda by himself would eat up half that asst budget).

LSU has had one of the highest paid coaching staffs the last few years in college football and still generated yearly profits exceeding $12 million a year. Coaches salaries will not be the reason they don't hire the coach they want

didn't suggest otherwise but was just responding to the "we can offer 5/3 baws, no way they can match that."

Y'all are going to be annoyed how much you have to pay for an unproven coach, but I'm not suggesting you can't do so

It'll be closer to 5/4.5.

LSU could offer him 6 with incentives that would put him around 7 if he won the SEC or NC.

And pay his assistants top dollar.

UH will not be doing that.
UT could, but UT doesn't pay their assistants more than LSU now, which is crazy to think about considering how much money they have.

I'm not even worried about UH. They will not even be LSU's top competition for Herman.

maybe. It depends on who else is involved. I'd guess closer to 6/5 and a 4-year guarantee

I've said I don't expect us to pay more than 5.5 for Herman. But if UT is involved it may have to be 6. Hope not.

My guess is LSU can go $5.5/5 to start
$500k SEC bonus
NC is a bump to $7mm

In other words they know they won't be able to keep him but have to make it look like they tried to appease their fans.
