Has Michigan ever confirmed these numbers? If not, is it Harbaugh's people floating this, and if it is,didn't Harbaugh's agent just crap all over Michigan? Would it not indicate they're merely using Michigan as a bargaining chip with other NFL teams. It leaves Michigan in a vulnerable position of having to up their bid or having to hire, and overpay, a HC it didn't want.

The numbers came from the Michigan media days before the NFL guys got it. This is coming from the Michigan side.

The Michigan blogs may be a delusional echo chamber, but I have seen nothing that says this was floated by Harbaugh to leverage Michigan, and they are happy they went balls out and put this on the table.

quote:

Michigan took its time to get their offer together, waited until Harbaugh was eliminated from the playoffs, aimed, and fired.
...
THEY'VE DONE WHAT THEY HAD TO DO. Michigan assembled a kickass offer to come back to Ann Arbor and run the town. It is now highly public. If Harbaugh doesn't come, that's on him. No milquetoasty private conversations about how he flaked leaking out over the years; no debate about whether Michigan had a bonafide offer. They came strong and public in exactly the way they should have last time.

It could have just been an offer they know will be refused. Makes them look like they are not the cheap bastards that they have been in the past. They know they can afford it but know it is unlikely they will need to pay it.

Odd that it was floated into the public.

Not a bad theory, but then what are you telling the next guy you have in your sights when he isn't offered that high of a number? He'll look like a fool.

Bingo.

When the hire isn't sexy, they have the defense of "we tried". JH probably agreed to it being put out there. Increases his position and helps the school look good.

The number is leaked from michigan side. Not jh and his agent. It is a leak not planted.

The hiring process is like this:

Michigan called jh agent asking we want you, are you interesed? This happened in nov before Maryland game

Jh said yeah we will listen.

Michigan said how about 8 yrar 49 million?

Jh side said too low.

Back and forth, ok, settle on 6 years, 49 millions.

Jh side will say if you offer, we will accept. At this point, les miles and his agent knew the michigan job is almost out of reach. This happened monday. Les talked to Media that night. that day i started the 'feel bad for miles' thead and said it is a done deal that jh will come to michigan. you can check it.

Michigan sent out official offer yesterday. And someone in michigan will leak the news. This happens all the time. It can be the secretary or hr or anybody. it is a done deal so who cares.

Today jh and his agent will go over it to make sure there is no hidden traps etc.

So the chance jh come to ann arbor is 90%. The negotiations already done. long before the media report the numbers.

If jh accepts the formal offer, Michigan and jh will be quiet until 49ers season is over and Michigan call the conference. nobody is going to mention the money. media will get it from public record request later.

Otherwise, Michigan will move on to the next target.

So, its not a done deal?

Cool, glad you said it was. That's definitely never come back to haunt anyone on this board.

If that's true, their powers that be are crazy and college football mentally challenged.

I 100% agree with this. It makes no sense to put an offer like this, if true, out to the public. I understand he is their top choice, but if you fail you look really bad and you run the risk of insulting your #2 or #3 guy if you drop his offer very much. imo

I laughed at A&M and their $5 mil gamble, but this offer makes their gamble look tame.

So why in the holy hell did Michigan use a news service out of Arizona to leak this?

Saban to Texas for $10 million a year started floating around this time last year...maybe just to show the world they could afford such an amount. But that was never made public like this Harbaugh news is.

It might have also been made public by someone in Michigan that wants the world to know how ridiculously high the potential offer is...to derail it?

How will Michigan's academia circles care for this?

None of that explains why it would be leaked by Michigan though. I don't think the "well we tried" angle overcomes the embarrassment of getting turned down after offering the richest coaching contract in football history.

I think Harbaugh is using Michigan.

Also very plausible and makes a ton of sense
