Sounds like exactly what we should be looking for in an O.C.

quote:

Few offensive coordinators in the country have been as creative this season as Matt Canada,

quote:

I've heard your approach described as creatively simplistic: You make things complex for defenses and simple for your team.

quote:

I hope, as you talk about what we do, is we use our players to maximize their strengths and use as many different guys as we can to spread it around. If you only have one guy, it’s pretty easy to stop.

That seems like an insane concept after watching 12 years of pants-shitting with dual-threat QB's in a pro-style system from the '40's.

I really think he would be a great fit here . Pitt averaged 42 points per game compared to our 28. Besides hanging 43 on Clemson and getting the win, they also scored 42 in another big win against Penn State.

quote:

Canada, a 24-year coaching veteran who over the past three seasons orchestrated some of the most productive offenses in NC State history, was named offensive coordinator at Pitt by Pat Narduzzi in January. Under Canada's direction, NC State averaged more than 30 points per game each of the past two seasons. In 2015, the Wolfpack scored 33.2 points per contest, the third highest average in school history.

quote:

In 2014, NC State racked up its highest rushing total since 1977 with 2,659 yards. The Wolfpack averaged 6.0 yards per offensive play, the second highest mark in school annals.

quote:

From 2004-10, Canada coached quarterbacks at Indiana. He was the Hoosiers' offensive coordinator his final four seasons (2007-10) after serving as passing game coordinator for two years (2005-06). The 2007 Hoosiers posted a school-record 412 points in earning an invitation to the Insight Bowl, the program's first postseason game in 14 years.

Yes, I agree that Canada is good, but we are going off of 1 year of success. At NC State it was not good and eventually was fired

Pitt outscored Jimbo and FSU in all of their common match ups this year, including the win against Clemson.

So false.

The NC State coach fired Canada because of in-fighting. The firing was highly criticized and Canada had a new job in 24 hours. NC State's offense went into the tank without Canada this year.

Thank you for the explanation of Canada's leaving N.C. State.

Can you (or anyone) explain what kind of offense he runs - to the point, does he run a power spread attack in some form?

The No. 3 Clemson football overcame four turnovers Saturday in a 24-17 overtime win over NC State.

NC State's offense didn't exactly go crazy that day. Pitt on the other hand dropped 43 pts on Clemson, with 460+ yds of offense and over 300 yds passing.

ETA: Oh by the way, Canada's NC State offense put up 41 on Clemson in 2015.

Exactly

Canada improved their offense every year he was there. The move was widely criticized .

Anonymous ACC coach : Shocked by Canada"s dismissal .

NC State made mistake by firing Canada

It was also widely criticizing on NC state forums at the time.

This guy seems like such a no-brainer to me I think I'm gonna be kinda sick if O doesn't at least interview him to see if they hit it off or feel like there could be some good chemistry there.

Whole bunch of misnomers about Canada on this board, namely that's he's a "power spread" coach.

Keep in mind that Canada was the OC at Wisc when they dropped 70 on Nebraska. So his offenses have changed with the personnel to NC State, and then again to Pitt. At Pitt he runs a version of the spread.

In Canada's own words:

quote:

"We always want to run the ball. Perfect world, clinic talk, you want to say your're 50/50 but some games they take something away and you try to run it every play, and some tell you throw it every play. We're always going to have the desire to run the football. That's something that's important to us. It's an identity of our team to be physical and run the ball but we're also always going to take what they give us. So, we don't have a number either way."

Wow!!! What a unique philosophy! And so very... refreshing.

correct sir..

happens often in the coaching circles where the HC fires someone that threatens their job...

This is music to my ears. I want a coach that can adapt to his personnel rather than trying to shoehorn his players into a system that they may not be suited for. That's what I like about Aranda and that's what I'm hoping for in an offensive coordinator.

O Canada

I hope Saban doesn't get him first.

quote:

“I know the business we’re in, if people look and see where you are and what you’re doing and like it, people are going to come get your guys,” he said. “When you’ve got a great staff, people are going to try to go get them and poach them, but we’re going to do what we can do to make sure Matt stays here for a while. … It’s not all about the money. If it were about the money, I’d have been gone from Michigan State a long time ago, but if it’s about the money then maybe you’ve got the wrong guy.”

Great - thanks again. I hope Coach Orgeron goes after this guy - he sounds like a perfect fit and we might even get to keep him for longer than one year (unlike Kiffin, I think).
