Kirk Ferentz runs the show up there. You also have to look at the fact that Big Ten Offenses are abysmal outside of 2 teams, even more so in the West.

The Big10 West where Iowa plays is abysmal. Tulane's conference is tougher than the Big10 West.

Elmer Fudd would look like a great DC in that division. Literally most of the worst offenses in the country are in that division.

Posted this another thread but this is such a lazy take. You don't think any defense looks good when you don't face top 80 offenses on a regular basis? Look at what happened when our awful defense played MSU, AU, and Army this year! They put up similar numbers to Iowa. Iowa plays offenses that bad nearly every game. The best offense Iowa has played this year is PSU which is not even in top 60. You saw what Michigan did to them last week? Allar through for 4 tds vs Iowa's and hung 31 on them. That offense is statically equal to AU with a weaker schedule. The only top 20 offense Iowa has played the past two years was OSU last year and OSU hung 54 on them. So pretty much they are the same or maybe worse than our defense when you factor in the ranking of the offense.
It's the same reason Aranda had better defenses at Wisconsin then he did at LSU with a 1/4 of the NFL talent on his Wisconsin defenses. Dave finished top 10 every year in the three years at Wisconsin. He only did that in 2016 at LSU with that super talented defense with a senior tre white, jamal adams, beckwith, key, jackson, and jefferson.
