At 37, Jerod Mayo now will become the NFL’s youngest head coach, taking over a title that Sean McVay had held since being named the Rams head coach in 2017; Mayo is a month younger than McVay.

Don’t care but seems like a placeholder hire.

they been grooming jerod for some time.

eta: recent success of demeco and antonio pierce probably helped the look of hiring jerod as well.

He was the co-DC hire with Steve Belichick and was the coach in waiting. This is insanely high risk.

Has he ever been a DC?

I’m not surprised but it’s bizarre that you hire within when you have stunk as of late.

I realize Mayo is also a former player and was already on the staff.

But how TF do they pass on Vabrel, a guy who has already proven he is a very competent HC?

Is 4 yrs coaching experience the least of any coach becoming a head coach in the NFL?

Yea a very very odd hire. Coach in waiting, but never given the chance to be OC or DC?

Vrabel played for the Pats but he isn't part of the Pats' coaching tree. He was in college and the Texans, IIRC.

He also probably doesn't want to go to a roster like that.

I'd be shocked if it was top 2 or 3.

This was done solely for the purpose of skipping the hiring process and naming a successor quickly. Vrabel was probably on the wish list, but they would have had to go through a pool of candidates and several rounds of interviews. That being said...someone is about to score big time when they hire Mike Vrabel.
