this point has been brought up by several posters on here (or the rant), including myself. it's the nature of the beast. the top candidates are hard to land and timing mixed in with luck is usually the difference.

the conception that all we need to do is throw lots of money at who we want ("make them say no") we can get anyone we want because we're LSU is wrong.

being able to actually cut a deal with an experienced HC at a major school that has already won championships is a long shot. it is for EVERY school and has been for awhile now.

in all likelihood, we are going to need to hire a successful guy at a program that doesn't pay that well so our top money will attract him. remember, coaching in the SEC west could be the last HC job you get. it's win or die.

Do you have any suggestions on who that might be?

i think reality is starting to sink in that even though we're a great program with the ability to pay a competitive salary we can't just snap our fingers and get whoever we want and it isn't a guaranteed upgrade over what we had.

We should have the upper hand with timing and better talent

More win now

LSU fans often undervalue the prestige established now

Hopefully we get one of the big names

Finally someone with logic. So unusual for the rant. As long as settling doesn't involve that white shrimp boot rambling illiterate from Northwestern State, I'm good.

they've been mentioned on this site. hell, they're aren't that many but certainly more than just Herman and Fisher. of course, all of them have been disparaged. but it is what it is. Gundy, the WV guy, Fleck, Mcyntire (sp), Fedora and others.

sure, we all want a "homerun" hire but it just isn't likely. the saban hire was not a homerun either.

I'd be happy with any of the following

Tier 1: Herman, Kelly, Fisher, Stoops
Tier 2: Brohm, Briles, Leach, Fleck, Fedora, Scott Frost
Tier 3: Taggart, McIntyre, Frank Wilson

I knew when miles was fired settling was a possibility. But I don't want to hear anyone say firing miles was a mistake. It was time.

my definition of "settling" simply means not getting the homerun hire. in this case, no Herman, Fisher, Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh, etc.

This is indeed a possibility.
It's also possible that we get a great coach.

We'all see soon enough.

Fedora, MacIntyre, and Fleck are all reasonably priced.

Gundy signed an extension this season that will pay him $4.2 million a year. His buyout is $3M.

The information on his pay on this board has been wrong.

I have not heard even ONE person saying firing Miles was a mistake. have you?

it most assuredly was time to go in a different direction. it may be bumpy for awhile; it often is. but it was damn sure needed. this is why college football is so cyclical. if FSU would have canned Bowden 5 or 6 years earlier they would have saved lots of anguish.

Not following you much at all on your blanket comments, but the quote above is what triggered me. Any decent coach worth his salt would kill for the opportunity to coach in the most competitive league there is. To imply a coach would shy away because the competition is too tough reeks of contradiction. Coach's, are by nature, extremely competitive to a fault. So tell me, you actually think a coach would be scared to work at LSU because it could end his career due to the competition?

I'd be happy with the tier 1 coaches.

The firing is rarely the mistake it's the next hire that causes issues

first of all, my comment was indeed just my opinion. that means it may not hold water with some coaches. sure, HC's are very competitive but they are not stupid. it's a business decision. for example, if you are secure in your job and making 4+mil per year with a lot of political pull in your athletic department, is it worth it to get a million or so more per year to go to a pressure cooker like LSU? these guys are full grown men that don't respond to the base challenges common in the school yard. expectations at LSU are so high that a coach has to be uber successful in the nations toughest division or he's considered a failure.

no question that LSU will appeal to a lot of coaches but their personal reality may prevent some from coming here.

You are among the idiots of this fan base. Getting a coach like Fisher, Saban, Meyer etc. Would require basically a lateral move. Basically that coach would have to believe that LSU is a dream situation for them to make the move. Something as simple as Jimbo's kids could keep him in Florida. Money is about the same, chance to win a NC and conference about the same.

In the list below this group is the HCs that people don't believe is the "home run." They are at schools where it's hard to sustain a great roster, thus making it hard to consistently win and the opportunity to compete for championships just isn't there. These coaches would also get a pay raise to coach at LSU. Most would crawl on their hands and knees to coach here.

This type of hire may happen, and it may work out amazingly (like Saban did) or it may work out horribly. The thinking of people should be fired because they didn't get someone in that first class is ridiculous, without the new coach even coaching a single game.
