I don't get the idea that just because he's a great D coordinator he will automatically be a great HC. Two completely different skill sets.

Great defensive mind and his organization and articulation are certainly comparable but lets not get carried away

Those are really not good comparisons. Both were under Saban. It's hard to determine whether or not a DC is elite when he works under Saban. They will always be successful under him. It's pretty well known that Aranda is the reason our defense is successful. O's not out there telling Aranda what to do. I think a better comparison for failure would be Charlie Strong, who was actually successful at Louisville before going to Texas.

Of course nothing is guaranteed unless you have Saban or Meyer. It's about risk level really. How far down the coaching search list are we willing to hire someone while at the same time letting a defensive genius go? I hope not too far.

FWIW. From a bama friend of mine who writes for their SB nation site:
Here's what I wrote today about O: Many opposing fans have ribbed LSU folks about Orgeron, sarcastically begging them to hire him. Count me among those who legitimately thinks he could be quite successful if given the opportunity. This quote just proves that he is dialed in to the mindset of that fan base. No matter what happened on the field, he is not going to give Tide fans the satisfaction of an LSU coach conceding that Alabama is better, and that's how it should be. The guy can recruit like crazy and he fits well with the locals. All that's left is surrounding himself with top assistants - he already has one in Dave Aranda - and he could be well on his way.

I hate to break it to you, but Saban is probably the best college football coach ever

im not exaggerating because i refused to believe it for a long time, but his combination of recruiting skills, game knowledge, attention to details, and gameday coaching puts him head and shoulders above the rest

Urban Meyer is one of the few coaches that can challenge him and I still dont think Urban is as good as Nick

The point is this, the likelihood of Aranda being "the next Saban" is extremely slim just because of how good Saban is

thats no knock on aranda, the guy appears to be a defensive guru, but to put him in the same conversation with nick saban as far as being a head coach is concerned is at best too early, and at worst ludicrous

I bet most Alabama fans would tell you this.

I would hope not. Neither did Miles. This is really a given with anyone we hire. Is a coach going to go into an interview and say "I think Alabama is better. I might have a hard time beating them."

Until he takes a HC gig.

I really have no interest in what a Bama writer thinks. That's not the most trust worthy opinion when it comes to hiring who they have to compete with every year.

Aranda is the defensive herman. I don't care if he doesn't have HC experience. The dude is a beast of a coach.

This guy is a true bammer but an honest friend. He never bullshits me. He also told me what was gonna happen on Saturday. He was dead fkin on. It pissed me off, but in the end, he was spot on. He's. it a fan of Herman and his recent struggles. He's definitely not a Jimbo fan.

I don't think so. Mostly because of personality. Aranda is very quiet and reserved. He's like the mad scientist behind the curtain. He's a genius, but i don't think he's got the personality to be Saban. That's not to say he wouldn't have success as a HC one day, I just don't see him having that much success.

I think it would be a safe bet that at minimum LSU's defense would be outstanding as long as Aranda is either DC or HC. Whether or not or offense will be outstanding is another question. The players love Aranda... There's always risk but I can't see LSU having a dominant defense and being anywhere out of the top 25.

The downside with Aranda as HC is that most HC don't call their won plays.

So you aren't just getting Dave Aranda's defense.

Look at Strong. He was an incredible DC, and he just had to fire his DC mid season to take over it himself to save his job.
