I've known this story and some rational people know this too... but he will always be a rat to most.

quote:

"Think about this," Campbell said. "How bad do the issues have to be to make a man walk away from $10 million and subject himself to the criticism he knew would follow?"

Very telling....

I think the thing that really hurt Petrino in this situation was his past history at UL and constantly fishing for other jobs. I don't know if he would have taken quite as much criticism (still a good bit, but not as much) if he didn't have the past such that it is. At any rate, it is interesting to see the other side. I can't say I blame him if he was that miserable.

funny that people have been making arthur blank look soooo innocent in all this. i think petrino got backed into a corner and did what he had to do.

Arthur Blank is a meddlesome owner. He was pushing around Michael Vick in a wheelchair and always drawing attention to himself.

I think Petrino knew the next few years in Atlanta were going nowhere fast. He was only there a year, so him leaving the NFL and going back to college isn't a big deal. Cost himself a few million, but if it makes him happy to be in Arkansas - more power to him.

What's that- lie to his boss' face and run out of town with your tail between your legs- not even having the guts to tell anyone face-to-face?

I've been in jobs I wasnt happy with, but that's no reason not to conduct yourself with honor and dignity.

And his agent bringing up the firing of Reeves is a joke. Sure they fired him, but they also had to pay his contract. You can fire my arse today if I walk away with several million bucks. Petrino walked out on the Falcons, leaving them a complete mess, and gave them nothing but a chickens-t goodbye note.

His agent can try, but you cant polish that turd.

Get real, dude. Atlanta was a mess before Petrino arrived, got worse while he was there (see Vick mess), and they will be terrible now that he is gone.

Blank wanted a scapegoat and he got it. Petrino tried to get out, Blank said not no, but hell no.

Quiting on the team is a joke as well. Those players quit on Petrino before the man ever arrived.

As for him wanting to go places. So what? What else is new. A coach is either praised or fired or looking to move up. Going from UL to Auburn or LSU was a move up. Going to Atlanta was get rich way of getting out of UL.

Petrino, unfortunately for us LSU fans, will probably do just fine at Arkansas.

Go tigers.

Why do we have to put up with punk arse behavior like DeAngelo Hall getting in his coach's face on National TV, then have to "feel sorry" for them when their coach quits?

Get real. This is a business. People (bosses) leave their companies every day for different jobs. You don't see the employees acting like pussies in the fetal position.

The media (which includes former athletes) is brainwashing you all into thinking that grown men have been the victims of abuse.

They had no chance to make the playoffs. They have named a deserving black assistant as interim coach. A man (Emmitt Thomas) the player love, who may get the job. They need to quit whining.

Blank said he would not stand in Petrino's way if he decided to go back to the college game. Blank denied Arkansas permission to talk to Petrino. Blank is dishonest and deserves absolutely no sympathy in this.

Petrino also had the burden of having to coach players who were insubordinate and had a bad idea of what a coach/player relationship should be. I don't feel bad for the Falcons.

If I was Petrino, I probably would have done the same thing.

So its ok for a coach to quit on a team with 3 games left in the season? To me, that's like a coach telling a team before a game that they need to give 60 minutes of effort, then the coach going home to take a nap after the third quarter because the team is losing.

After what he did, you gotta be a complete hypocrite to tell a team that they need to be dedicated and committed.

If hog fans condone what Petrino did, then they cant hold it against any hog player who decides they want to transfer mid-season because the team has a losing record, or they saw a school with a bigger weight room...

Sounds more like desperation to me, on both sides. Arkansas had to land a name coach and Petrino was looking for any way to get out of Atlanta. Arkansas just happened to be the spot available, but he would have gone to any major program that would hire him to escape that situation.

Man, Deangelo Hall needs to STFU! I can't believe that he was on TV whining about Petrino leaving. Maybe if he concentrated on cover D he wouldn't get burnt so often.

Blank has as much blame in this as anyone. He hired a coach that apparently felt that he may one day want to retuen to college, and agrred to step aside if that was indeed his desire. BP ent into a situation with the assumption of designing an offense involving Vick. We all know why that didn't work,(23 months says it all). He did the right thing, leaving now before he was ran out in the next year or two. This Falcons team is simply not good, with or without Vick. Let's not forget that they have missed the playoffs the past 2 yrs WITH MV. The players can say what they want but they quit playing for BP a while ago.

And there lies the problem with Petrino to Arkansas. He saw the only opening where there was real interest and took it. Saban and Petrino are both in situations that will become harder for them to stomach the longer they are there. Both will be gone in relatively short order and leave both schools fanbases wondering why anyone would want to leave such a GREAT opportunity. Petrino will be the perfect person to give Arkansas a reality check (due to ridiculous expectations) and make them realize what they let go to Ole Miss.

Give me a break....

Arthur Blanc is a meddlesome owner that thinks he knows football. He made Petrino's life hell. He came to the SEC, the best in the land. You guys lost two games and because you play in the SEC is why you are playing in the national title game. The SEC and West conference just got better with the addition of Petrino.

I think TigerChad had it right on.

If not for Petrino's lack of loyalty in the past (see UL job) we would be hearing of this, but not nearly to the degree, and it would have taken a lot of ammo out of ESPNs bag.

Petrino's a good recruiter and a good coach. The SEC West just got that much more interesting.

He wouldn't have quit if Blank let him talk to Arkansas like he said he would. The article said he wanted to FINISH the season with the Falcons but Blank pushed him into a corner and he did what he had to do. What he did was wrong, but until we know what REALLY happened between the two, we should have an open mind.
