If we hired someone with Saban's pre LSU resume, fans would revolt

Just keep that in mind while you're so sure of who we should hire.

fans need to understand that while LSU may be a top 10 program, it's not necessarily a top 10 destination for the few coaches to whom it matters.

What's that got to do with anything? It doesn't change the reality that there was a phenomenal coach out there without an eye candy resume.

This is so amusing, we are a top tier program now so we are so arrogant we wouldn't look at the resume of the person who helped build our program...........

I am guessing ya'll are too stupid to even tie your own shoes?? This is EXACTLY the type of thinking that pushes a program back decades.

Yes.

But I'm speaking to how our fans would react.

Heck. There was heavy skepticism THEN. I remember the boards.

That's not at all what people are saying. Saban was a big risk. He was not proven at that point. We are now a stronger program and can attract more proven coaches than Saban was at the time.

The POINT is that if we could have hired the MOST PROVEN coach available that year, it would have been a step down from the Saban hire.

Meanwhile, a quick perusal of the "proven" hires shows a mixed bag.

This is why I'm not getting all attached to some particular prospect. The next great coach might have just gone 6-5 this year.

I think you are not giving Saban enough credit for what he did at MSU. MSU was on probation all his years there and he did go 9-2 in his final season but he did lose two a row after beating Michigan in 1999. But still he did a good job at MSU considering the probation status.

Lol logic isn't your strong suit.

Obviously no hire is a sure thing. You typically want the safest hire. For example: if you can hire Saban or Urban, you do. They are the most sure thing out there.

I give him a ton of credit.

I am only observing that everyone seems to think the only guys who should be considered are guys blowing the world up and they'd lose their minds if we "only" hired a guy with that MSU resume

No, no he wasn't. He just didn't have the win/loss record that ya'all think is necessary. While wins/losses matter, it shouldn't be the deciding factor. There are so many more qualities that determine success and Saban had that. The smart football people knew it too! I hope our decision makers do their due diligence and look beyond just being a coach at a top program. They need to look for those qualities that make a championship coach, not just wins/losses

But, even back then, Saban was considered one of the best coaches in the country.

Nick Saban was a former NFL defensive coordinator who had earned a lot of respect. He did a great job turning Michigan State around. He had almost universal respect from the majority of the college football world.

Any coach that came as highly recommended as Saban, with similar evidence that success could be had, would be greeted with cautious optimism, IMO.

You can add Miles to that. LSU will make any coach who can recruit a top 10 coach.

I tend to agree with all that.

Why do our own fans think that LSU is not a huge draw to potential coaches? That shite is infuriating. UT may be a better destination, but i'm sure a lot of coaches around the country would give up a nut for an interview for the LSU gig.
