No. Cowherd said it was someone that was currently coaching.
did Schiano coach a peewee team this season? If so, then Cowherd has an out...

Miles, Mullen, Mora or Schiano.......

Look like four good candidates to me.

Do Mullen or Mora have any links to Michigan? We know Miles is a M man. Schwann coached at Rutgers, which is now in the BIG. What about Mora and Mullen?

the 3 previous coaches to Schiano had 3 winning seasons combined in 16 years. Schiano inherited a program that was coming off of 1-10 and 3-8 records.

He had winning records in 6 of his last 7 years at Rutgers including the only 5 bowl wins in the programs history.

(Brought them to first bowl in nearly 30 years as well)

He's an arse worthy of comparisons to Petrino, Pelini, and Saban with less success.

Last week New Jersey wanted Schiano back and fire Kyle Flood.

Great choice for Michigan

The new AD is trying hard to kill the whole "ties to Michigan" thing. Mora has some limited ties; according to mgoblog, "Former M OL Courtney Morgan is on Mora's staff, so he could be a point of contact. [Michigan insider] Sam [Webb] also points out that Mora and Mike DeBord were on the same Seahawks staff($) five or so years ago."

As far as I know, Mullen has no ties. But it shouldn't matter - Michigan does seem to be genuinely trying to find the most qualified candidate this time around now that Pizza Man AD has been canned.

Welcome aboard, FT.

I would give Schiano a "B." He's a bit of an a-hole and his stock seems to have dropped since the Rutgers days. But, he did do that whole thing of studying programs for a year and I think will be a much better coach because of it. Isn't his offensive philosophy pretty conservative?

I haven't heard any talk down here about anything serious between Michigan and Mullen. Is there a belief/evidence up there that either party is interested?

Schiano is a great college coach, not so good NFL coach. Nobody cared about Rutgers football ten years ago.

Meh. I'd pump the brakes on great. He did do a very good job building up Rutgers football, but let's get some perspective. They had one great year (11-2 in 2006) in a pretty ordinary Big East. Then they kept winning (7 to 9 win seasons, with one 4 win dud), but he never got them over the next hump to greatness. They never placed higher than 2nd in a bad conference.

Again, he's good. I just don't think there is anything in his record that says great. Maybe he would be better in a bigger job with more money and easier access to recruits. However, he was at Rutgers for 4 years before having a winning season. He was obviously comfortable there, they gave him time, and finally got them turned around. However, he obviously wasn't too cozy in the NFL. Can he handle a job that comes with big time pressure and expectations?

The most impressive thing about this tweet is the fact that Gil Brandt tweets.

There's definitely interest on the Michigan side. I'd say Mullen is one of the top choices. But I don't have any insider information and haven't heard anything out of Starkville. One potential hangup is that Michigan's offensive personnel don't fit Mullen's scheme, so the transition costs would be high.

I still wonder what it would have been like if he took the Miami job in 2006.

I don't think it will take so long. Brady Hoke has left a team in relatively good shape; in the years to come we'll be talking about the devastating 2015 class (which fell apart because Hoke didn't win in 2013 and 2014), quarterback, and the safety and defensive line depth charts, the latter of which is another losing-related thing. As for the offensive talent, these guys were actually kinda good at running zone by the end of the season; you can absolutely teach them to do that in a spread offense. Also offensive line starts happen to be one of the better predictors of offensive success, and Michigan returns a ton of them in 2015 and 2016.
Shane Morris would probably fare better in a spread because the decisions are way easier, his legs are good enough to be something defenses have to account for, and his arm is more than adequate to be scary downfield. Malzone's talents are best used in a passing spread.

Michigan deserves an idiot like Schiano. I hope it happens.
