Cal's defense is worse than Oregon's and there is no heir apparent at qb. You're also competing against Petersen and Shaw. I would've loved Chip back at Oregon but having a coach with a personality like Taggart has been a breath of fresh air. Cal makes sense location wise but it's a huge risk.

It was clear Sonny Dykes no longer wanted to be at Cal. He interviewed at other schools the last three seasons, which, sources told ESPN, angered those inside Cal's athletic administration to the point many were hopeful he was hired somewhere else – namely Baylor this year. It's just interesting timing at this point to fire the HC unless they've got someone already lined up (i.e. Chip).
I wonder where Dykes goes now, I doubt any teams are knocking down doors to fire their HC just to bring him in. Will someone fire an OC though? Much more likely, but he might not be willing to take that step down.

If Cal fans think they're getting Chip and end up with Spavital, I'll LOL so hard,
That said, if Chip goes there, the Pac-12 North instantly has the best set of coaches in the country.
