Brian Kelley at Notre Dame

Does anyone really think this is a good hire for ND?
I mean the guy is a good coach but has no defense what-so-ever. The only reason he had success at Cincy was because his offense put up the points, but they couldn't stop any one on the D side of the ball.
To coach at ND he is going to need some kind of D. You can't be in shoot-out every week with some of the opponents that ND play.
Just wondering what everyone else was thinking on that move.

decent D last year but lost 9 starters. If he hires a good DC he will do pretty damn well. It does hurt him though that Clausen and Tate are leaving. He has won everywhere he has gone and I don't see Notre Dame being any different.

I think Kelly's a good coach, but I wonder how hard Notre Dame went after bigger name guys like Stoops or Meyer. It seemed like Kelly was the first name mentioned after Weis was fired and now, 2 weeks later, Kelly is (supposedly) about to be hired.

I agree with this thinking. Why wouldn't ND wait until after the bowl season to really talk to someone. I know they need a coach for recruiting purposes, but I think they are jumping on a coach to quickly.
They should put out more feelers to see who may be interested, most coaches right now aren't going to say anything until after their bowl game.

Notre Dame is a hype machine. As much as they want to win, they also want to hire the hot name RIGHT AWAY to get all the attention. Stoops or Meyer negotiations would've lasted until after bowl season and still no guarantee they would come. Kelly is the hot new name (IMO rightfully so) and they went with him. They just need to make sure that he hires a solid DC.

I think it'll be interesting none the less.
Michael Floyd=Marty Gilyard
And he can plug and play with his quarterback.
He won't be able to lure top pro style QBs to ND anymore, but should be able to get a bump in athletes at the skill positions. The big question is his defense as ND was absolutley dominated on the the D-line this year. Manti Te'o will provide a nice LB to buold around and I think they have some skill in their secondary.
If they have the same cake schedule next year, I see 9-3, with BCS bowls the following year on.

Agreed + 1000. The problem with Kelly, is he is extremely difficult to work for.

He actually lost 9 or 10 defensive starters from last year and still went undefeated...pretty good IMO

Prediction: In his third season Kelly has enough offense to beat all of his opponents except USC (Matt Barkley shreds his D) but because it's Notre Dame and they only have one loss they will play in the NC game and will get utterly destroyed by an SEC defense.

i have heard that he is a defensive minded coach. just sayin.....and i know he lost almost his entire D from last year due to gradualtion. i really do not know though.

#25 scoring D last year.
He lost 9 starters between then and now.

Cinci's schedule>>>>>>>>>>>ND's

He'd be a good hire because he has proven success at multiple college stops. That's always a good sign.
But I get the feeling ND may go in a different direction. If they wanted Kelly, it would already be done. They seem to want a defensive minded coach. Maybe Tuberville or Edsall?

The guys knows how to coach college kids. That in itself makes him an improvement. I personally would have preferred Edsall or even Skip Holtz who will probably be another Kelly in a few years. It's all about the DC, IMO.
As for Meyer, I think he dug his own grave by reaffirming ad nauseam his commitment to UF. ND doesn't want to look foolish going after him, and sooner or later Meyer's going to pay for being the Belle of the ball that wants to make herself seem so unapproachable. A couple of years without his starts on offense and an improving SEC West and he'll wish he'd taken a better posture with Notre Dame.
That said, I wouldn't want an Urban Meyer offense at Notre Dame anyway. I prefer running games like UA balanced with consistent and occasionally brilliant QB play in basic sets. Too bad neither LSU or ND (I went to both schools) has it.

Kelly is over-rated. All he plays is poop teams, once he plays Florida then we'll see how good his team is.

The smartest thing for ND and Kelly to do is seal up this deal BEFORE the Sugar Bowl, not coach the bowl game and get the frick out of Cincy. If he coaches against Florida AFTER having accepted the Notre Dame job and gets blown out it's going to look really bad on both ND and Kelly's part.

What do you think he will do at Notre Dame?
Exactly, he will play more poop teams.

And I think they should worry about pressing Meyer harder. He is much easier to get having lost the SEC championship game, and he will work better at ND.
