At what point do you start thinking NFL coach?

For instance, assume LSU had to pay near Saban money for a head coach. At that level, slightly over 7 million, only a few NFL coaches make more. Bill Obrien, Jack Del
Rio, Chip Kelly, and Mike McCarthy make less than Saban, just to name a few.

If we're paying 5-6 for Fisher, why not pay 5-6 million for Chip Kelly? Jack Del Rio?

Pay them more money than they're currently making.

Not all would consider it, but it seems like some would.

i want chip kelly. He would kill it at LSU. He was foaming at the mouth in the 2011 game for our level of talent watching mingo run down lamichael james. All he needs for a championsip are the lsu players

I'm a big fan of Kelly as well. He'd be above Herman and Fisher on my board. So would Del Rio, who apparently makes 1.5 million less than Sumlin. And 3.5 million less than Saban.

The 49ers aren't firing their coach for the 3rd year in a row and Chip isn't coming back to college unless he has no choice.

There will come a point when Chip Kelly will have to ask himself if he wants to be remembered as a journeyman nfl coach or a potential college football great.

Pete Carrolls and Nick Sabans aren't a dime-a-dozen.

Remember Dave Wannstedt at Pittsburgh? It's an entirely different culture and style of operation.

at this point i'll be surprised if chip kelly isn't coaching in college somewhere within the next year, two tops. They could probably get him if they were willing to wait.

Chip Kelly doesn't have the personality to maintain the recruiting relationships he would have to to compete in the SEC on a weekly basis. He may be the least charismatic person in football. It may not matter to you, but it will matter to high school football coaches and, more importantly, parents.

I always heard that chip hates the recruiting, boosters, etc aspect of college football.

It's not like he won't be able to get a job in college if he doesn't work out in SF.

It won't work out in SF, and I think people are severely underestimating how much of a mess that franchise is since Harbaugh was pushed out. I could easily see Kelly leaving after this year, and I doubt anyone would (reasonably) blame him if he did.

I don't think there are many NFL HC's who would take a college HC job. There are probably assistants who would jump, but in many cases, they would jump to college just to get some results so they can get an NFL HC gig.

In all but a few cases, it's fools gold, IMO.

Chip Kelly is the only reasonable NFL option. Even then its a long shot. He'd kill it at LSU

Let's just offer Mike Tomlin $10 million a year and call it a day.

Not chip, because he's only been in the NFL a couple of years. But some guys that have tenure will stay in the NFL for the simple fact once they hit X amount of years they get NFL pension based on their highest earning of 5 consecutive years, or something like that. That's a lot of money the rest of your life to walk away from.

Some, well, they just want to be in the NFL because it's the highest level to compete in.

I think he does. But once he figures out dealings with professional athletes, owners, and media are even worse - like Saban decided - then he'll decide the lesser of two evils is college and he'll devote himself to dominating at the college level.

Jack Del Rio?

Jack Del Rio has coached in the NFL for 19 years. I don't see him making the transition.

There was an article that came out around the beginning or middle of his second year with the Eagles where he basically said he hated the anscillary responsibilities of being a college football, particularly the drag of 24/7/365 recruiting.

He said something to the effect of liking the NFL because the day after his season is over he can watch film and game plan whereas in college he had to hit the road recruiting the day after his bowl.
