Do you see anyone in Tuscaloosa telling Nick anything? If Texas wants him, that's what the big boosters will have to learn how to do. And I don't see that crowd ever learning to keep their mouths shut over anything.

Alabama is well known for having boosters intertwined with the Athletic Department. They were at a point, though, they didn't given two shits what they had to do to get Saban. You want total control? Fine, just put the program back where it needs to be. I think Texas is about to that point. Wouldn't you agree?

Big12fan would you be happy with Malzahn? Spread HUNH offense?

Yes, although the one element that Saban would bring that nobody else could deliver is the splash it would make with recruits. But I would not be unhappy with Malzahn. For me personally, Saban wouldn't be my first choice, but I only donate a 3 figure amount yearly and none of it goes towards athletics, so who the hell am I?

Whats the rub with Steve Patterson? I heard this guy loves to fire people, and cleaned house at ASU by axing over 100 people in the AD

I've read that rumor too - not sure if it's true. He did, I believe, trim some serious fat from the Portland trailblazers organization.

I'm not sure if anyone knows yet how he'll be - I've read that he was hired because he will be the hatchet guy (and will make sure Mack retires) and I've also read that he was hired because he'll help Mack get one more year. Who knows (well, someone knows but not us peons).

Even though athletics success often translates into increased academic giving (look at A&M), faculty sometimes doesn't think that way. Some even hang on to the notion that the University pays all of Mack Brown's salary, which is completely false -- most is donated privately and independently.

It's funny to me in this day and age so many people still don't get this. Athletics drives exposure which drives applications and gifts. It even helps with research grants a bit. Given how the state is hammering us with cutbacks and is basically at war with the academics, you'd think they'd pay more attention to ways they can gain autonomy.

The problem is most academics see things in black and white and not the shades of grey that life really is. You may not like athletics and how focused the university is on it, but you better damn well get on board because it's your gravy train whether you realize it or not.

Which of these biggest boosters signs contracts for the UT Athletic Dept.?

The boosters often tell the AD who to write the check to - you don't believe that the AD actually hired Brown, right? (By hired I mean made the decision obviously). That was Tom Hicks and a couple other boosters (plus Royal). Then they told Dodds to hire Brown.

Mack is 30-19 overall since 2010 with a 18-16 conference record - you think he's still here yet doesn't have total control of the program? Dodds was never going to fire him nor tell him how to run the show.

The only time I know that any booster at Texas has forced Mack to do something was after the 5-7 season in 2010 and he was told that the OC had to go - and he resisted that until it was either the OC or him.

honestly football coaches are above cowtowing to ADs any more. Patterson isn't going to tell Mack what to do. He doesn't have that power. He may have it over Barnes or Augie but not Mack. Hell, I know at A&M, Sumlin doesn't even report to Hyman. Completely outside that chain.

I agree, but those same boosters would also be the ones that hired Patterson. I think they all know going in what the game plan is. So, the only real question is if Mack still has enough support from those same guys.

I'll answer this way - if there is a coach who is of Saban's calibre, ready & willing to come to UT - Mack will have no way to stop it. At worst, he would be an obstacle that has to be removed.

typical "big money booster" wish list and salaries w/ no actual grounding in reality

More than likely, none of that plays out as described in OP; however since every big name was thrown at the wall, maybe one will stick.

No belowpar, no care

Not sure how true but have been told by many people including Bama allum that they will break the bank to keep him. Even if its 10 mil a year. Could they pull it off?

At what point do you say enough is enough? If I was professor at Bama, I would be disgusted by paying $10 mil/year for a football coach. They are a university after all.

Saban is probably worth every penny of 10 mil, but there is no way that it doesn't piss of the academia people.

From what I've heard, somewhere between legit and unreliable. Like all so-called "insiders." In fairness to him/her (I guess it's a "him") many of the things being reported on are very complex with lots of moving parts, so what may be absolutely correct one day is not the next. I used to read his stuff when he posted on a free board a couple years ago. Seemed like he had a decent track record.

F*ck them.

In all seriousness, you're right - rate of return on Saban or Meyer is huge. Hell Briles probably has the best rate of return of anyone. But academic types don't care. Texas has been lucky in that the president is a huge sports fan and understands this - but even he will draw a line somewhere.

I also think he saw how the fans and administration turned on Chizik within 2 yrs of winning a title.

I think he saw firsthand what a dumpster fire of a head coach Chizik was and pretty we'll knows that "title" was due to himself and a Mr. Cameron Newton, Quarterback

Nobody is saying Texas doesn't have more money. But you can't conflate the Saban chase with what Texas is likely to do with Gus (if it comes open and if there is interest).

What people are saying is that Auburn and Alabama can match reasonable offers from Texas. If Texas offers Gus 4 or 4.5 million, Auburn can match that. Same for if they offer Saban 6 or 6.5 million. I don't know how high either program is willing to go, but they certainly can. They could match even higher, but I think these are about the limits. Paying 5 million plus is stupid money for Gus. 6-8-10 million for Saban isn't that impossible, but it would be absurd for Gus or any other coach at that level, and it would test what programs are willing to do.

So the point is, if Texas is going to give Saban money for Gus, then yeah, they'll probably get him assuming he cares at all about money. They might get Saban if you're talking 8 or 10 million a year.

But playing in a realistic realm of 3-5 million dollars for Malzahn, I think the chances that Gus leaves Auburn, a championship caliber program he's familiar with and fond of, go way down.

Mike Tomlin would be the best recruiter in the history of recruiting.
