Do you think there's any chance of Martin wrapping it up satisfactorily in two more books?

I really can't see it.

He would have to have Dany leave Mereen immediately, which I don't think will happen. Arya and Rickon would have to make it back to where they are going to have an impact. Jon would have to be revived by the end of the book with some major revelation behind his resurrection. Littlefinger would finally have to make his move. All of the pieces for the final battle would have to be in place by the end of the book with pretty much every major plot line revealed. In other words... +1

If there is a series to end in total anarchy, this is definitely the one.

Does anyone think Longclaw will be returned to Jorah before he bites it?

ETA: makes me wonder about the AA prophecy...revolves around Lord of Light, the color red, fire, Light Bringer, etc.

If Jon is a wight/ hybrid Other/ whatever...

Can he still be AA? Longclaw ain't Light Bringer anyway...Stannis' was a fake, he made no attempt to hide it...Dawn is NOT Light Bringer...so WTF?

Will AA turn out to be a blue/ grey (black skin like Cold Hands) Godless abomination with an obsidian blade that reflects light rather than emits it?

Won't be the first time prophecies were mis interpreted

I hope so. Jorah is one of my favorites and I would like him to see him rewarded with his ancestral sword.

I don't think Jon will be any of those things. I am starting to believe that his revival will be more of an awakening. Not a return from death, but the start of his true life. Light Bringer will be when Jon claims it. It could be any sword in Westeros IMO, it's the action that Jon will perform that will make the sword Lightbringer, not the metal it was made from.

Not really a crackpot theory, but I think I found one of Martin's influences...

I saw "The Eagle" when it was first released for rental...(Spoilers for the movie to follow- beware)

and immediately recognized "Hadrin's Wall" separating Roman Britain from the rest of the unclaimed NORTH, where the Gaelic(?) tribes ran WILD and Caesar's control did not exist. Especially the quote "No Roman can survive NORTH OF THE WALL."

The scene where Marcus and Esca travel through the gate to the North, the derisive geers from the Roman guards at how foolish they were to travel beyond the wall...the Britains living there being mortal enemies of the Romans...

There were some other similarities...deserters of the Roman military living free on the other side, etc...but some are nit-picky...(like a relative disappearing beyond the wall)...and not worth mentioning.

But, based on Martin's age, I can easily imagine he read the book the movie was based on "The Eagle of the Ninth" (1954) which was a popular book fitting his time-frame as it was geared toward kids/young adults.

I know he was 6 in 1954, But he was 10 in 1958, at the height of the book's popularity...

Anyone reading this thread would love the movie, BTW...predictable, but really well done.

I enjoyed it as much as it possible to enjoy a movie starring Channing Tatum. It could have been very good with the right lead. Agree that Hadrian's Wall is a great fit for The Wall in aSoIaF. Especially considering that Westeros is basically England. Nice catch.

Channing Tatum

Yeah I hear you -

You know the guy was thrilled to land this role and get outta the BS crap chick flick shite his career has been comprised of - especially lucky after single-handedly utterly ruining a potentially decent "Son of Noone"...opposite Pacino and Liotta.

Then to follow it up with 21 Jump Street (raspberry) and AND THEN the male stripper movie. pffftttt. He deserves what he gets.

Back to The Wall:

yeah the resemblance in the geography of Hadrian's Wall and The Wall = uncanny (not the greatest examples, but you get the idea)

Greetings, long time lurker. ASOIAF is riddled with historical mythos, from Paris kidnapping Helen and sparking a war (Rhaegar/Lyanna), to Nero fiddling while Rome burned (Aerys threatening to burn Kings Landing), all the way to Hadrian's wall keeping the Wildlings (Scotts) out of their civilization.

This is a great topic, I wrote my final collegiate paper on Tolkien's influences aside from the Bible, like Beowulf, Grimm and the Arthur Legends.

I love finding history in fiction.

There is no three headed dragon other than the fictional one on the Targ sigil, commemorating Aegon I and his sisters conquest of Westeros - becoming a symbol of the Targaryen ruling line collectively. But -

Good question. The prophecy speaks of dragons being awakened from stone, which is fulfilled by Danny hatching the petrified eggs...but there are other sources of dragons (possible)

1)The Red Keep
The Targs were consumed with hatching dragon eggs for hundreds of years. In all the secret places/ passages in the castle (protected by Maegar I's assassination of the builders)IMO, the most likely place to find a cache of eggs hidden somewhere.
2)Illyrio/ Varys.
The only people we know FOR A FACT had any eggs at all, and I KNOW they wouldn't turn over ALL their eggs to Dany, especially if Aegon is truly a Targ or even a Blackfyre. Possible it's all they had and thought as property of Drogo's Khaleesi, that was the safest place to keep em.
3) Euron Greyjoy.
He threw his dragon egg into the sea. Yeah, right. Unless he never had one to begin with, but he has been to the Smoking Sea/ ruins.
4)Summerhall/ ruins.
The tragedy that killed Egg (the unlikely) was presumed to be a hatching/ blood magic event - so egg(s) were present, if not destroyed.
5)Ruins of Valyria / Smoking Sea.
If Euron did have an egg, this is where he found it. Also -
It was said that the doom caused fires so hot that dragons in flight were consumed, but not impossible some survived...wyverns underground, perhaps.
6)Dragonstone.
Theory is much of the castle, comprised of stone dragons, are actual dragons waiting to be released. (I like)
7)Winterfell.
Theory is that there is a dragon/wyvern/wyrm living under the castle, reponsible for the hot spring in the Godswood and the flow of hot water thru the castle walls designed to heat it by Bran the Builder himself.
(meh)

And of course, The Citadel. Just no proof I can supply.

Meant to post my latest crackpottery:

The Others are The Children of the Forest,
Or once were...driven further and further north by the Andals and set on vengeance toward all humans in Westeros, as they view them all as invaders...their longevity, use of magic, and the fact that they are only in Westeros, not in Essos.

Very much akin to Elves/ Orcs according to Tolkien.

Only problem is the Children of the Forest were supposed to be quite small while the Others are very tall.

Second, his arc hasn't finished yet. By a long shot. Just too many unanswered questions. He is also able to warg and others have warged into their animals to save their souls so to speak.

I definitely think part of it will be him surviving in Ghost for a while. Hence the inclusion of that Varymyr Sixskins prologue that was a how-to on slipping skins.
