To me, Mel (with Theon's help) seems to be the most likely author as she would do anything to further the cause of the Lord of Light. She may have seen the Night Watch's betrayal of Jon in the fires and acted to ensure it happened.

I really don't see how Mel would know of Reek though.

She can resurrect people, is possibly undead, and sees prophesies in the flames, but she can't have any idea who "Reek" is?

I doubt she could get a name though. Her prophies tend to be more vague than names.

I'm pretty sure one of the letters is a forgery- one sealed in pink wax, the other with black (I think those colors are correct)

I still say if you read the hostage demand, the only person who benefits from each and every name listed...is Mance.

ETA: And he knows all about Reek, especially if he is the Ghost of Winterfell.

Just checked- the "Bastard" letter to Jon was "sealed with a smear of hard pink wax..."
And from the preview Theon chapter, the letter to Stannis:

quote:

"Just now, the turncloak is more use to me alive. He has knowledge we may need. Bring in this maester." The king plucked a parchment off the table and squinted over it. A letter, Theon knew. Its broken seal was black wax, hard and shiny. I know what that says, he thought, giggling.

So if Theon recognized the black seal originating from Winterfell? The Dreadfort? Ramsey, it points to Jon's letter as the forgery.

I wish I could. I ate a bunch of my sick days/vacation days when I had surgery in January or otherwise I would. As DMagic said, I travel to the sip on a pretty regular basis (the SO is there). But I've never been to NOLA and would love to go.

We'll have to make it an annual thing or something so I can plan ahead and go next time around.

Aww, you should definitely come here when you get a chance. Louisiana>>Mississippi .

And as for all these Hodornerds waiting around for my 10,000th post..."You [they] know nothin', Jon Snuhhhh"

And from the preview Theon chapter, the letter to Stannis:

I think it's likely that the letter is a potential forgery/not from Ramsay. It's been discussed at length on other websites:

Reddit on Pink Letter

Pink Letter has a hidden code inside of it

quote:

Mance has written the letter to "goad" Jon into marching on Winterfell at which time he will join Jon and try to somehow use the situation to advantage of his Wildlings. -from the ASOIAF forum

or:

quote:

I think that the Pink letter was written by Ramsay based on misinformation received from Manderly's forces and that Mance is really being held captive. The Manderly's after turning on the Frey's concoct this plan together with Stannis in an attempt to draw out the remaining Bolton forces (or most of them at least) from Winterfell. The Manderly forces upon returning to Winterfell present Stannis's sword to Roose and Ramsay claiming that Stannis has been defeated but "Arya" and Reek have been sent to the Wall to seek refuge. The ploy being that Ramsay is rash enough to gather a force and march on the Wall to get his bride and his Reek back thereby setting himself up for an ambush.

And then we have the actual text of the letter; how would Ramsay know about Val the 'Wildling Princess' (besides the obvious that Mance told him about her while being tortured)? I've always thought there was more to the pink letter than meets the eye--there are some hidden meanings in it and shouldn't be taken at face value.

quote:

Your false king is dead bastard. He and all his host were smashed in seven days of battle. I have his magic sword. Tell his red whore.
Your false king's friends are dead. Their heads upon the walls of Winterfell. Come see them, bastard. Your false king lied, and so did you. You told the world you burned the King-Beyond-the-Wall. Instead you sent him to Winterfell to steal my bride from me.
I will have my bride back. If you want Mance Rayder back, come and get him. I have him in a cage for all the north to see, proof of your lies. The cage is cold, but I have made him a warm cloak from the skins of the six whores who came with him to Winterfell.
I want my bride back. I want the false king's queen. I want his daughter and his red witch. I want this wildling princess. I want his little prince, the wildling babe. And I want my Reek. Send them to me, bastard, and I will not trouble you or your black crows. Keep them from me, and I will cut out your bastard's heart and eat it.

But then again, I find that I'm doubting myself because who else who know about Reek? I think the letter isn't direct enough to be from Stannis--so I'm ruling Stannis out. And then I'm led to contemplate if more than 1 person was responsible for the letter (perhaps Mel and Mance somehow collaborating on it). And we won't know for sure until GRRM takes a break from devouring lemon cakes to reveal it to us in TWoW.

And this post in that thread then makes me wonder again if Mance did it--and it is true that Ramsay would've sent some flayed skin, or a dick in a box, or blood, or something to prove that it was him (being the sick bastard that he is).

quote:

I believe the letter was written by Mance. He wants to goad Jon into bringing the wildlings down with him to Winterfell. Where he will either imprison Jon or try to get Jon to claim Winterfell. The deception could also be positively driven by Mance. Perhaps he's learned something about "always a stark in Winterfell" and knows that Jon's current place should be at Winterfell, not the wall.

Basically I'm leaning towards either Ramsay writing it (but lying or exaggerating some details/or given misinformation) or Mance.

More Pink Letter

This is major Crackpot that I never thought of before...but probably a stretch; never say never though:

quote:

What if glamors can be decoded? Switched. What if you could swap out the lock of hair from Rattleshirt (or whatever part of the glamor that was making you look like Rattleshirt) and substitute it with a bit of hair from Ramsay. Now you're Ramsay when other people look at you. And the "Mance" in the cage is the real Ramsay, disfigured enough so people won't recognize him. Everyone knows the Boltons are big flayers, so you'd have the perfect excuse to take off bits and pieces of Ramsay's face and chest so he's unrecognizable. Then do something to keep him quiet, like fork his tongue real hard. Now you've got this "Mance" to spank around at your leisure while "your" Bolton/Frey troops congratulate you (the real Mance) on a job well done. Of course the wildling women are probably dead for real, so I don't know what kind of guy that would make Mance if this was all part of his plan. Mance probably wouldn't have given up their identities by choice,..... so either they were easy to spot once everyone knew to look for wildling women..... or they were already caught during the prison break of Jeyne..... or else it really was Mance who got put in the cage and tortured until he gave up their identities. Eh.

I picture the get-together going something like the Zanthia scene from Role Models, only the "fighting" being for Ladytiger's hand.

Ok, I finally got around to the Princess and the Queen. The Daemon / Nettles / Sheepstealer angle is interesting. I also wonder what happened to the Cannibal. They say that there are cannibals on Skagos...

The whole glass candle thing makes me think that neither Sheepstealer, the Cannibal or any little dragons that they may have produced were still alive at the start of ASOIAF, but it still adds fuel for more crackpot theories.

Interesting, in your reddit link, how they all but concede the fact that Mel now recognizes and supports Jon as AA over Stannis...I know she's seen signs, but what are our collective thoughts on this...has it been discussed here before at all?
