Pride, I think, would compel the Tyrells to choose combat over the shame of a trial. There is no shortage of arrogance, especially with Loras, to make them think little of the risk.
And they don't know the Seven's champion.
Now, Loras might rethink this trial by combat if he knew his fight was against Saint Hound.

What pride is he saving when the tyrell family has already plotted and schemed to the point that they have the high sparrow on their side? All he would be doing is putting all his families work at risk for zero gain. He loves his little sister I will give you that but all he accomplishes in your theory is putting her at risk. That's not something he would do. Loras may not be littlefinger but he's no idiot either. I just can't see it happening.

Let's not forget that the gravedigger had a pronounced limp when we last saw him. Maybe its something that will heal in time, who knows. There's been a lot of buildup for an eventual Clegane family showdown, so I definitely think that one's coming in some form.

In Egg & Dunk they describe a trial by Seven, and it is 7 vs 7. The defendant has to find 6 other Knights to fight with him. I don't think we'd see 1 person have to face 7 others.

If memory serves it is either 1/1 or 7/7.... one of the sides has the option to choose. I guess it is the accuser since Dunk was scrambling to fill out his side.

If it was 7 on 7 who else would fight? Would it have to be the rest of the Kingsguard or other Lannisters?
