I don't believe the COTF are the Others.

The COTF are small and childlike. The Others are taller than humans.

The Others return the dead to create wights. The COTF fought against them in the War for the Dawn.

quote:

The children of the forest and their allies, the First Men, fought valiantly against them, but were driven southwards by their advance. The 'Others', as these demons were called, were eventually checked when it was discovered that weapons made of dragonglass (obsidian) could kill them. A great hero, who in the eastern tradition is known as Azor Ahai, led the war against the Others wielding his sword of fire, Lightbringer.

You seem to have misunderstood me. What I'm saying is that SOME of tCotF became Others, not ALL of them. An extreme faction, if you will- one who's beliefs/ motives did not jibe with the rest of tCotF. It's not like there was a consensus decision for all of them to become (or create) the Others...They were a peaceful race, nature oriented. In my mind, I see them defending themselves, but within rational limits...I don't see them consciously creating a weapon capable destroying all life out of spite...a few of them, sure.

Absolutely, the TRUE CotF would fight against Them...the Elves fought the Orcs, yes?

I'm attempting to apply a Tokien paradigm here, and it may or may not be what Martin is thinking.

re-reading my theory, what I really like the best is IF tCotF had anything to do with creating the Others...it was an accident. Clearly, they had powerful magic at their disposal, and just as they did to The Neck, it didn't always work the way they intended. They were losing the war with the Andals, and desperate to survive, turned to darker, destructive magic as a last resort...and it backfired. Another example of a civilization destroying itself with it's own technology, as the Doom of Valyria could have been (mining too deep...another Tolkienish idea)

As far as the height difference, magic can do all kinds of shite. If the Others were intended to be 'super soldiers' why would they be designed to be small?

driven South vs. North:

I'd like that link. I know that the only area not defeated by the Andals was the North, hence why there are still WW trees there. The history I read long ago stated the Neck was turned into a swamp (meant to be a sea) to stop the spread Northward.
That made sense to me.

I don't think Martin would intentionally borrow something from Tolkien or the typically fantasy stuff, ie the farmboy turned savior stuff.

I actually like that idea. Like you said with the orcs and elves.

I'll do some more digging.

I just do not see any evidence supporting the "Others" being derived from the CotF in any way.

I think they are 2 seperate species which where more prolific in times past. Times when magic was more prolific. Now is the turn in the cycle when the red star heralds the return of dragons, magic and unfortunately for Wetseros, the Others.

Who will be AA reborn? will there be one or will the Others prevail?

I think the others and the children are two seperate species that were the original inhabitants of westeros. Long ago they waged war on one another with the children eventually winning. Then the first men came who fought the children and eventually they came to a treaty agreement on the isle of faces. The others returned at some point towards the end of the age of heroes. The children with the help of the first men drove them back and erected the wall to ensure they could never return.

Eventually the andals arrived with their steel and drove both the children and the first men from their homes. The first men settled and defended the north but the children weren't quite so fortunate.

Now after thousands of years spent brooding and festering the children and the others have brokered a tentative alliance in order to regain their home before its too late.

We are witnessing the final push from two desperate peoples who will do anything to earn the right to carry on living. Even if that means they have to make common cause with their mortal enemies.

I thoroughly agree they are two separate species. I only like the idea of rogue COTF. But that's not Martins style to copy Tolkien.

The Others are the Apache. The Children are the Algonquin.

interesting side note: In Bloodraven's history in a wiki of ice and fire, it reads that Bloodraven took himself into the Land of Always Winter
"to await the birth of Bran Stark

That is huge. Any reference to where this appears in the books or is it some nugget Martin threw out in an appearance? I've tried to find some clues about why and how Bloodraven left the wall and found nothing till this.

Hey piping in again with a theory on John Snow's Dad

It's Ned Stark's younger brother

quote:

Benjen Stark is the younger brother of Lord Eddard Stark and a sworn brother of the Night's Watch. He is the First Ranger, or leader of the rangers, of the Night's Watch.

as a member of the NW he can't have kid's and if it came out that he had a kid, then I guess he'd have to die or something.

That's how Ned could say "you are a Stark, you have my blood"....and not be his kid.

I would think Benjen was too young to procreate and be a member of the Night's Watch when Jon was born.

when did he enlist? before the mad king's demise?

ETA: he had to be in the Night's watch prior to the mad king's death, because Ned's Dad, brother, and sister were all killed by him....why not Ned and little brother?

Dammit, it's already almost canon that Raegar Targaryen (Dany's now dead older brother) is Jon's dad and Lyanna Stark (Ned's now dead sister) is Jon's mom. Because you keep coming in here with these stupid theories without having read the books, I hope you read this and your mind is blown.
