So the Theory is that he's actually Howland Reed from Greywater Watch (one of Ned's bff's who was at the TOJ). It would explain why Howland has been missing the whole time after sending his kids to Winterfell. Their appearances are similarly described and sperated by eighteen years. And Howland supposedly learned magic back before he partied with ned and Lyanna so any minor inconsistency is just magic.
It's fricking bullet proof.
But Google alt shift X's breakdown, he's pretty thorough on it.

Mysterious stranger with a shady backstory shows up and avenges ned Stark for no discernible reason? It's bulletproof, bank on it.

Except HE'S DEAD.
At least in the show anyway. You can hold out hope all you want for it to be true in the books. But I don't see that either.

I'm on book 3 now..they have to be hiding something about Howland Reed it's just too weird. When Bran and company escaped winterfell he asked Meera and Jojen if they would go to their dad for help and they quickly changed the subject..something is up.
