Former NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher, which the movie "The Blind Side" was based on, filed a lawsuit in court Monday alleging that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy tricked him into signing a document that made them his conservators. On Tuesday, the Tuohy family to fire back at his accusations...
quote:

“I sat Michael down and told him, ‘If you’re planning to go to Ole Miss — or even considering Ole Miss — we think you have to be part of the family. This would do that legally,'” Tuohy said. "We contacted lawyers who had told us that we couldn’t adopt over the age of 18; the only thing we could do was to have a conservatorship. We were so concerned it was on the up-and-up that we made sure the biological mother came to court.”
...
"We're devastated," he said. "It's upsetting to think we would make money off any of our children. But we're going to love Michael at 37 just like we loved him at 16."

The Blind Side netted the Tuohys and their TWO children $225,000 each plus 2.5 percent of the “defined net proceeds.”

“defined net proceeds.”

Hollywood accounting is some of the most shysteriffic shite on the planet. People will read that and think OMG the movie made 300 million so the family got 7.5 Million! they are loaded! When in reality, based on their methods that movie might only have netted 15-25 Million TOTAL actual profit. and thats what they would have taken their cut on. Assuming its even that high. The studio probably used those proceeds to finance other projects and such. Hell the number might be even lower than that.

So they made at least $1mil minimum. I think what they did for Michael Oher, "like a oar in a boat", was far past what he could have done on his own. He would have NEVER gotten that far without that family helping him. He prob wouldn't have passed high school. They prob put a ton on $ towards his HS and college tuition/food/living expenses. Not to mention all the tutoring they paid for with the tutor/living expenses. I just think this is suspect until all details from both sides come out. He should be more thankful in my opinion. It's obviously no one knows all the facts and motivations of the family except them.

That doesn't answer the question why didn't they give him a cut of the deal for 'HIS' story? Seems shady as fuk on the Tuohy's part.

It’s their story also not just his

Iirc he was an Jr High all city lineman when they "befriended" him, and on track to go to UT. Not some big nobody that had never seen a football field.

Lots of sketch in the story the movie told I'm sure.

There are differing accounts as to when they befriended him and he moved in. He was not a Jr High All City Lineman and not on track to go to UT. Even Oher doesn’t allege either of those.

Oh my bad...the Memphis kid was on track to being an LSU lock..duh.

Let's not forget the millions he made as an NFL lineman. What is it with this guy?

Michael Oher had a long NFL career and made millions of dollars. This family helped him out when he was at a low point in life.

He should be HAPPY that they made money from the movie. This guy is complete scum - not a victim

Agree except that his entire life had been a low point up to that point, with hard work and support by all especially the Tuohys, his life went up and up.

The movie is misleading. The book by Michael Lewis is far better regarding depth and color of Oher / Tuohy relationship.

For them to get a %, I'm wondering, did they write a book about this or did they write the screenplay? Most screenplays are sold outright, or they used to be with no royalty money.

So if this guy wrote the book, he got something, for the family to get something...my thinking is that they are some smart go-gettin mfers. What did M. Lewis get, do you know?

Dude was sleeping on the floor in various people’s homes, often dilapidated. Had a 0.0 gpa. Wore same damn clothes every day. Athletic ability aside, he woulda been maybe the best garbage man in Shelby County but not for the Yuohys love and support.

Athletic ability aside? Love and support? They'd never have scammed him if not for that athletic ability.

Wrong. He was in a foster home when they took him in. He was on the football, basketball and track teams before the Touys ever heard of him

You can adopt anyone at any age, in any state. It is actually quite common. People adopt adults as their children for inheritance purposes.
user avatar

This is not true. I looked at adopting my adult nephew and you basically have to go before a judge and make a compelling argument for why adoption is necessary. It’s not as easy as signing a piece of paper.

Why do I think lawyers are playing a much bigger part in this than we're reading about?

Phil Collins' daughter is Emily In Paris, a-hole. You'd know that if you spent time with your wife and kids.

This story mirrors my life situation without the NFL of a black friend we took in. No father, mother was murdered at 15. All 3 brothers in prison. We gave him his first christmas. He lived with us. My dad paid his moms bills. We helped community round up and pay for a lot of his university education. His childhood was so rough that he's become schizo and thinks we're evil people. Just ungratefulness. Has engineering technology degree but working at a Lowe's. I sometimes think it'd be better to have let him go his own route instead of intervening at 10 yr old.

That’s an unfortunate story as well as his now, but in most cases doing this not only helps the kid, the family usually grows tremendously and learn quite a bit about life and it works out.

How has no one mentioned yet the fact that the Tuohys were wildly rich before knowing Michael Oher existed. Rich like making $7.5m off a movie like someone below mentioned wouldn’t have changed their lives.

Wonder if he was gonna end up in the will just as much as the other kids. (lol)
