I just moved out of Oregon after living in Portland for 28 years.
Do not stay at the mountain. It is a short enough drive from Portland that you will be fine. Multnomah falls is very nice and right off I-84 heading out to the Gorge.

My friend from New Orleans sent me this link because I live in PDX.
Try and go to Screen Door for brunch or dinner sometime.
Best wings in Portland is either going to be at Pok Pok or Fire on the Mountain.
"Por Que No" is a great Mexican place on Hawthorne and Mississippi
