Well ... that's very cool.

But the thing has a retractable roof on it. Why on earth do they need to take apart the field and store it in the basement? That approach seems like a solution in search of a problem.

You missed the entire point which was stated clearly in the tweet. They want to host other sports during which they want to keep the natural grass pitch alive with lights and maintenance, hence the need to store it while continuing to have full access to it.
