Not sure about RMNP but Yellowstone can be fun in May. Most of the roads should be open but check with the park. The only time I went in mid May it was very nice. Snow everywhere but the roads were clear. The buffalo herds should be pushed down in the valleys so you will seen lots of animals.

If you are looking to hike you may need crampons for icy areas.

I live in Denver and Wyoming received a good bit of snow last week. I would check with the park before heading up to Yellowstone. The Colorado Rockies should be fine to visit if this helps?

Don't you think the trail ridge road would be closed at some parts due to snow this early in the season?

It's still too early to visit both IMO. Wait til June, otherwise there will be road closures throughout bc of snow.

Heck I'd go. The crowds will be lighter. Shouldn't be a bad drive from Omaha if that's where you are starting from.

I think you will have better luck at Yellowstone/Grand Teton than at RMNP.

Trail Ridge Road doesn't open until Memorial Day weekend, and while you can still go to other places in the park, it is the biggest attraction.

We were in Yellowstone in mid to late May about 9 years ago and it was nice. No big crowds, but most of the roads were open. The only thing closed was the upper loop section between Canyon Village and Tower Junction and the road out to the northeast entrance.

Looking at the Yellowstone website right now, they have a live map that shows road closures and about half the park's main roads are closed. Here is the map. I would keep an eye on that as your trip gets closer.
