I don't think there are many white water rafting places in Arkansas. I know the Buffalo River is popular but that is not really whitewater.

The Arkansas River in Colorado has good rafting in Canon City and there is one that takes you right under the Royal Gorge which was the best one I've done.

Yeah ain't a whole lot of genuine "white water" in Arkansas. Buffalo River is only really Class I, with one or two parts that occaisionaly be considered class II. Looks like a nice paddle though.

If you're talking the Arkansas River in CO, The Numbers is better than the Gorge. More people die in that section. Brown's Canyon and Big Horn Sheep Canyon have some good rapids, but are more "mellow" than The Numbers and Royal Gorge, relatively speaking.

Sorry about that. Arkansas state. I understand there no "real" rapids there. Was looking for the best area to take the family. Yaking, floating, fishing. We love the outdoors and want to be on the river as far as cabins rentals.

Okay. Are you talking about this time of year? Rivers are low. Buffalo is great, but you're going to need to hit the lower buffalo, which isn't real exciting, though still beautiful.

Spring River is a nice float and has decent water year round.

If you're talking some other time of the year, then the Buffalo is a no brainer. America's first National River.

King's River is also nice and pretty, but it's no the Buffalo.

Mulberry is a bit more challenging and technical than the Buffalo, but it's not as pretty.

Oh, don't raft the lower buffalo. You'll be paddling like crazy the whole time. Some people are rafting the upper these days, but it's kind of a pain in the arse, imo.

Did a class 4 in Costa Rica on a high river. No thanks, never again.

Hogfly:

For someone like me, (myself and a girl) Would you recommend tent camping around the north side of Lake Greeson just to spend the days at Albert Pike?

I want to spend a weekend at Albert Pike but camping in the recreation area is a no-go. Is that a solid plan or so you have any input?

That isn't really my area of the state, so I don't have first hand camping experience down there. That being said, Lake Greeson is very pretty and would be a great place to camp. I'm not sure what your drive over to Albert Pike from there will be like.

Here's my recommendation:

Do the White River to where it meets the Buffalo.

Use the White Buffalo resort for your shuttle/gear.

They are where the two rivers meet and are great.

I've done it three times with my little ones.

They have a float that usually takes me 4-5hrs, and I just let the current take me most of the way.

Fishing is great and pretty easy (trout), just drift fish and everyone will limit out by the end of the float.

The last section where the Buffalo is close is beautiful bluffs.

White River is cold, FYI.

You can rent a cabin from White Buffalo right on the river.

I don't think they have rafting trips on it, but my brother and I canoed the Big Piney Creek back in college, and that shite had some pretty serious Rapids.

Ran across this thread. In regards to Albert Pike, it depends on what you are wanting. Sounds like your just interested in tent camping? If that's it, and rec area is a no go, then the winding stairs is your answer. It's a beautiful area, great hiking, and can camp/fish the little Missouri. You mentioned Greeson, wonderful lake. Grew up skiing this one. I always used the Kirby area for camping. But if your wanting off beaten path camping, winding stairs is it.

As far as the OP, listen to Hog. My 2 cents, best float experience in this country is the Buffalo in the Spring to late May. Ponca to Pruitt with an overnight tent stay on the river. When u get off the river, a night stay in one of the Buffalo Outdoor Center cabins is a must.
