Wifey may get promoted and I’m sick of my job and the humidity of SE Louisiana. We will have the option of living in Seattle or Portland area. They may even let us live in Bend but not sure yet. Which one and why?

Eta....downvoted for getting involved in a thread you clearly know nothing about.

The city sucks and it's an awful awful commute to Portland. There and back. I'd kill myself first.

Bend, it's that easy.

Eta...I guess I'll tell you why.

Seattle and Portland are cool but I'm about done with cities with a lot of people and traffic.

Bend has over 90k people but no traffic. I guess the traffic circles all over town help.

Over 300 days of sunshine a year.

Only about 12" of rain although they do get snow but it's a dry snow. Not the wet stuff on the west side of the Cascades.

Central Oregon is literally an outdoor lovers dream and is very close to many many activities year round. You don't see many heavy set folks for a reason.

Good food and breweries are everywhere.

You're married but for me there's blonde eye candy everywhere. No matter what city you move to you'll deal with libs. Might as well be in Bend where there are less crazy left ones.

If you need to enjoy the big city Portland is 3 hours away.

There's an airport in Redmond (21 miles away) so flights don't have to be out of Portland. I have no idea on prices but I know they are cheap going to Nevada.

Hard to say without knowing your interests. They're in fairly close proximity and have a lot in common but, overall, they're pretty different. Short answer is that Seattle is a bit more "cosmopolitan", in close proximity to a lot of things to do. Portland also has a lot to do but feels like a large Olympia to me.

I'm in the Seattle area if you have any specific questions about there. I visit Portland pretty often but I'm in no way an expert on that city.

Eugene would be perfect. College town, not too big, surrounded by wine country & very close to the beach. Your welcome!!

He said the job is in Portland or Seattle. Portland is a long drive from Eugene. If you want a college town and wine country near Portland you should check out Newberg.

Something I know we always mention because it usually matters.

OP, no state income tax in Oregon although if you choose Bend it'll be worth it.

If it matters I might choose the Seattle area. Although the traffic might not be worth it.

OP, knowing the area where your wife would be working would help too.

Thanks. We love the outdoors. Even the kids ski (8 & 5 yrs old) and I fly fish. Wifey loves hiking. Bend would be ideal for lifestyle, but I think Portland or Seattle may make more sense for the job.

She will work from a home office but travel to medical offices in Seattle and Portland a few times a month.

I'd lean Seattle.

I have a cousin that's lived in Portland for the past 20 years. He says it's been overrun with hipsters the past 5 or so years, and it can sometimes be unbearable.

That said, I've never been there, but I loved Seattle both times I've been.

Parents live in the Tri-Cities area (Kennewick, WA). It's about three hours from Seattle. I've been to both Portland and Seattle, I'd live closer to Seattle. Enjoyed it more. Be forewarned, tree huggers everywhere....

Ah, that info is helpful.

Ok, so what I would do is live in Washington (avoid Oregon State income tax) but live just north of Portland.

Imo everything you like to do is a bit closer to Portland. Vancouver has high real estate prices but you can live in a smaller town like Woodland or Battleground. Cheaper homes and no traffic.

This is if you can find a job in Vancouver. You don't want to do the commute to Portland. It's insane. Your wife is close to Portland and only 140 miles from Seattle.

Portland is more livable. It's cheaper than Seattle and there is so much water that the traffic gets bogged down on the bridges.

Portland has less traffic AND the public transportation is really good. Seattle waited to long to put the public transportation system in place, and what they ended up with is not very good.

Seattle is more cosmopolitan, but both cities have their share of hipsters. If you stay in the suburbs, you can avoid all the homeless and hipsters, but your commute may be an hour+ each way.

Portland is smaller, but it feels a lot smaller than Seattle. As someone mentioned, you can live in Washington and not pay any income tax and shop in Oregon and not pay any sales tax.

Costco is everywhere in both cities.

More info - Although there is no state income tax in WA, there are pretty high sales taxes. If you are going to buy a home, the real estate market is still red hot here. So you will pay more and be buying at the height of the market. Property taxes are pretty high and were just raised again. DOT is knocking down the SR 99 viaduct on the west side of Seattle this November to accommodate the new toll tunnel next to the waterfront. There will be 2 "more" major roadway projects starting downtown at that time. Traffic will get even worse downtown (if imaginable) due to that. If your wife works from home, that may be a huge perk if you choose to move to Seattle.
