Hwy 395 on the east side of the Sierra Nevada range. It was a drive through on the way from Tahoe to SoCal. Several quaint towns with immense beauty.

I'm taking that part of that route in two weeks. Coming up from San Diego and up to Dearh Valley

I think you'll miss the northern portion of this route, which is the most scenic. Still intersting landscape though. You'll love Death Valley. Bring lots of water and let people know if you plan to get off the main roads.
