Would like to make a vacation out of it. Short of flying into Seattle and driving to BC I've never seen this part of the country. Any recommendations for the immediate area? Would probably have 3-4 nights that aren't actually staying in Portland. Thanks

Portland has amazing wine country nearby in several directions.

If you are wine people, or have never spent time at vineyards, I’d recommend that.

You can be in Willamette Valley in like 35-40 minutes tops

Willamette Valley wineries 30 mins to the south are pretty fantastic. Cannon Beach 90 mins to the west. Hood River hour to the east with incredible scenic drive along the Columbia River Gorge. Multnomah Falls along the way there.

We went last summer and also did a day trip to Mt Hood.

Plenty of options to choose your own adventure with 3-4 days to play with.

The Oregon coast down to Yachats and beyond is really worth a day or more. You can pretty much just drive and hit the scenic overlooks or random beaches to check it out.

Crater Lake is pretty spectacular, especially if you can book a room in the lodge overlooking the lake. It's a bit out of the way but very impactful to visit.

Mt Hood is great. We didn't do much there but spent a night in the Timberline Lodge. (One of the real hotels used for outside footage in The Shining)

The Columbia River Gorge is spectacular with several waterfalls and we did a dam tour that was fun. It was also right next to the Bonneville Fish Hatchery for a cool 45 minute walk-about with tons of sturgeon.

The Japanese Garden is beautiful if you like that sort of thing. A few cool views that overlook the city.

The city itself I find such a bummer. It is a beautiful city with a great climate and cool things all around, but the homeless and drug problem is just a real shame. I've been through there twice for vacations. Last year we were going to just hop down at Ken's Artisian Bakery for some treats on our way out of town and every corner was dripping with fentanyl zombies and really felt too unsafe to even pop out for croissants.

Crater Lake looks amazing but its 4.5 hours from Portland, so I don't think that is going to be an option for this guy.

Pretty much all the west coast cities are hamstrung by the same self-inflicted wounds. I prefer to spend 90% of my vacations enjoying nature's beauty, but I do enjoy the trappings of cool cities. Interesting shops and food options.

We visited Portland in August of 2016 (we travelled the week of the flooding). Portland wasn't the best downtown. Big homeless population in the parks. A few crazy homeless people wondering, but overall it didn't feel terribly unsafe. Last year it felt very different. We weren't comfortable trying to do many of the same things we did in 2016.

Perhaps I'm overly sensitive to walking through a crowd of bums with my kids and wife? It boils down to not putting myself in those situations if not necessary. There is so much else to do around Oregon that downtown and most of the PDX metro was just skipped.

oh, one more addition. I'd skip Voodoo Donuts, but make sure you get a few donuts at Blue Star.

I was stunned when I was in SF a year ago. Just total shithole that had descended into disgusting, junkie, crime ridden filth. I was unreal.

Get right out the city and its beautiful

Stayed at The Allison in Newburg years back. One of the best trips I’ve ever taken. Keep in mind I was drunk for the entire time. I’ll have to think of some restaurants. I remember The Painted Lady was amazing.

Don’t stay in or close to Portland even one night. It is a total shite infested crack adddicted shithole. I would rather walk down plank road or hang out in the ninth ward. But do enjoy the vineyards. Beautiful.

I figured this would get political but thanks for the help everyone. Will minimize the time spent in Portland.

Start in Portland then take a slow drive north up the Olympic Peninsula hw 101 enjoying a mix of coastal rain forests, rugged beaches (walking, too cold for swimming), picturesque towns, etc. Then loop over to Seattle and fly home.

Otherwise, work west (ocean) and east (Casades) out of Portland.

Even if you remove the political stuff, the best parts of Oregon are outside of the cities and out in nature. You can do most city stuff anywhere, but that part of the country has some really unique and amazing outdoor scenery and charm. Waterfalls, gorges, mountains, deserts, wine regions, an amazing coastline and some of the best state parks anywhere.

People would give you the same advice for Salt Lake City and that's one of the more orderly and conservative cities in the whole country.

Of course not everybody likes the great outdoors.

There’s a good chance you get lucky with good weather, or not. A bit sooner and your odds go up. There’s definitely a chance.

I would go to the Oregon coast if the weather cooperates. Oregon and Washington coasts both have amazing fall weather.

You can wait and see as you get closer. There will be openings available.
