The wife and I are planning a trip to southern Colorado the first week of October. Any recommendatiins of things to see and do?
On our radar so far is to stay in the Colorado Springs area and see Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Seven Waterfalls area, and the Royal Gorge, Then head to Durango for the train ride to Silverton and back. Then Mesa Verde. We thought about camping in the Gunnison area but temps can drop into the 20s at night so we nixed that idea.
We are in our early 60s so strenuous hiking, biking, etc. is not an option. Just looking for scenery, picturesque drives, attractions, etc.
Thanks in advance.

I'd head even further north from Durango to see Telluride and Ouray, the San Juan's are awesome.

How'd you get to Telluride, Gaston?

From the south through Ophir, amazing little area, and the north through Sawpit.

Did you drive the whole way, though, or did you fly into somewhere and rent a car? Seems like a tricky place to get to via airline, and I was just wondering the best option.

I drove. Lived there for a summer in college.
There was a sketchy airport just out of town back then. Could probably fly into Montrose and drive down.

I was actually looking at Albuquerque. I hate sketchy airports and was hoping to use Southwest points. It looks to be about a 5 1/2 hour drive from there, with most of it not real scenic until you get to Colorado. Just wondering if there's a better option.

Crowded and overrated IMO. Also a long drive from southern Colorado

The Black Canyon is fricking freezing at night so good call there
To me any south Colorado trip should include Telluride. Camping there would be an option for sure. There are some awesome 4x4 trails, easy to moderate hikes, waterfalls, shopping and eating in town, and plenty of other stuff. One of the best mountain towns you will find anywhere

While it could be too cold to camp there, don't drive past the Black Canyon without at least spending half a day there.

I've done this a couple of times. Its a nice scenic ride and not a bad option.

Go to Ouray. Rent a Jeep. Take on some trails. Beautiful scenery.
The train ride had great views also. Going to be cold!

Taos is an awesome stop before heading into Colorado if you are driving through NM.
As for southern CO, Telluride and Durango is what ya what.

Thanks for the replies so far....keep them coming!
We have friends that have a cabin in Eagle Nest NM and we are joining them there. So Taos is part of the trip once we get to NM. The wife and I thought we would take a few days and look around southern Colorado for a few days beforehand.
