Vacation in March. Mexico/Central/South America

I just got my time off request approved for March 11-19. My GF and I are trying to hone in one some places of interest. We obviously have some places in mind, but I'm terribly indecisive.
Some background:
Recently did Cuba, loved it. All about "adventure" travelling. Would prefer a lower price point, but we can spend more if need be. We've done Cancun, but I really dont feel like going to a resort. By "adventure" travel I dont really mean I want to rough it in the jungle, but just experience places/culture I cant experience here; yes, the whole point of travelling. haha The GF also wants some days to "relax". Blah, but Im sure ill manage. haha
One idea was to fly into Cancun, rent a car, drive to Tulum, spend a day or two, and continue on south. Possibly Kcalak, then on to san pedro. Catching the ferry into Belize city or Caye Caulker. Do some 'sploring along the way.
Other ideas include, but are not limited to, Columbia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, or Bolivia. Any other suggestions? Or maybe what you'd do in these countries.
Has anyone traveled inland by car from Cancun? I work with some Mexicans (well traveled and professional) that say it would be worth it and not nearly as dangerous as made out to be. I'm really not too worried about Narcos in the southern region. What about made the trip south to Belize by car? TIA, happy travels

We have done it a couple of times including 2 years ago. Check out this thread. Xcalak Mexico, one of the last traditional fishing villages on the Riviera.

My son and I flew to Cancun a couple of years ago and drove down to Mahahual to scuba dive. It's about 30 miles north of Xcalak and has a little more amenities. We rented a car from Easyway rentals and they were great. As Wick said, make sure you get all the insurance they offer. Somebody backed over our rental car during the night and knocked off a side mirror and scraped up the side of the car pretty bad. Of course it was a hit and run so we had no idea who did it. . I was pretty nervous about it, but the rental agency was really cool about it.
We rented a apartment on the beach for a week for about $500 that we found on VRBO. It was well worth it. The really nice part was most of the time you had this great beach all to yourself as long as the cruise ships weren't in port. Of course when they showed up, those days it was a mad house.
Pesos are dirt cheap right now, so it ought to be a bargain to travel right now. Of course, you never now when it's a good time to travel abroad. Cancun has gotten some bad publicity as of late.

Just returned from Tulum and very much enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend as a nice mix of sparse crowd but still people walking the beaches and restaurants/shops for the ladies. Very relaxing vibe. Will be returning.

Care to post some pics and a review? The sticky is missing Tulum...grateful if you'd contribute.

I think I will be able to do that. Don't hold me to a specific timeframe, but eventually. And also have no clue how to include pictures in a post.

1. First you have to upload them to any website, whether it be Flickr, Imgur or Facebook.
2. once they are there and uploaded, right click on the picture and choose "copy image address"
3. Whenever you are typing a post here on the site, look over on the right hand side and you will see a button that says IMG.
4. Click on that and it will ask you to type in the URL and paste the image address you copied in step 2.
5. That's it !

Just got back from Ecuador. Highly recommend Ecuador or Colombia. I doubt you'll go back to Mexico/Central America after going to South America

You gonna post some pics and review of Ecuador?

Mind if I shoot you an email? I believe we just decided on Ecuador last night after a small fight about the vacation. haha

Drop your email, I'd be glad to help. It's an amazing country and definitely on par (imo more fun than Colombia), but certain areas can be a little dangerous. Just a heads up, although we saw many foreigners and no one had any issues.
Colombia/Ecuador both have beaches, coffee growing areas, mountains, and the amazon. And Ecuador has the Galapagos. Ecuador has nicer beaches, mountains, better views, and the Galapagos. I didn't get a chance to go to the Galapagos this time, but I hear it's amazing. Colombia has nicer coffee growing areas and the amazon is the actual amazon -- Ecuador's amazon is more the rainforest (still badass to visit). It's also a lot easier to travel around to different cities in Ecuador. If both countries were equally safe, I'd recommend Ecuador. But as long as you don't take random taxis or wander around at night you should be fine.

Uploaded the photos I'm going to use for the write-up, cannot figure out how to get a photo link without it linking to my flickr album
Also, does the board need a Colombia write up?
