To get from Montreux to Zermatt we had a much easier train journey that our previous two. This trip was simple, Montreux to Visp on an SBB CFF FFS Inter Regional train connecting to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn that took us up the mountain to Zermatt.

We had a quick overnight in Zermatt and Mrs. H2O had a vision of where she wanted to stay for this part of the trip. She handled the hotel booking and found a great place in the Chalet Hotel Schönegg. While the hotel was situated up on the hill, with great views of the Matterhorn, it was connected to town via a tunnel which made it very easy to get around. Full write up at the link below.

Friend,

Thank you for your trip reports. I hope you were able to visit Geneva and see where the theological Reformation was born. It is one of my favorite European cities. Were you able to do any mountaineering in that beautiful land? We should consider having a Travel Board trip next year when we could attempt summiting Matterhorn, which is not as difficult as many think. Uncle, Charles and I took the Hornli Ridge route a decade ago, and I was surprised it was not more challenging. It is a steep 4,000 foot ascent, but did not feel dangerous.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Looking at it was enough for me, I don't need to climb it

We only had 24 hours in Zermatt and wanted to make the most of it. We spent the first day exploring the town and spent the second riding the Gornergrat Bahn up to the peak and hiking around the area.

Our time in Zermatt was short and after 24 hours we were back at Zermatt Bahnhof to head to our final destination, Zurich. Unlike our five train trip from Badenweiler to Montreux, this trip would be relatively painless. An hour on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn from Zermatt to Visp and a quick transfer to a regional train to Zurich should make for an easy travel day.

To wrap up our trip we spent three nights in Zurich. There were a few different Marriott properties around town though only 2 were within walking distance of the old town where we wanted to be, the Marriott Zurich and the Neues Schloss Privat Hotel. We chose the Neues Schloss based on location and had a decent stay, though for a hotel that charges over $500 per night, you'd think they'd have air conditioning that could cool the room.

Late to this thread
Great pictures.

After seeing your write up on Montreux I feel the need to listen to Deep Purples Machine Head.

I am green with envy

I travel for work every week (MC/strategy work just like you) and there’s no way I would have enough points to fly business class in KLM and stay in some of the luxury hotels you guys do.

What’s your secret?

Do you pay zero cash and just use points?

Thanks! I've got a few more posts up on the website but haven't had the chance to copy them over here yet.

We loved Montreux and I'd go back there in a heartbeat!

Thanks HGG!

Mrs. H2O and I are both fortunate to have great jobs which helps with the price of travel. Actually, this year I only spent one night on the road for work since my projects have been mostly remote.

I look at the cash costs vs. using points to try and determine the best use of points. If the rates/fares are reasonable we will just book using cash and save the points for another time.

Also, I'm very active on FlyerTalk which is a treasure trove of information that helps me maximize our travels. I'd start there with info and happy to answer any questions you have! My e-mail is on my website if you have any specific questions.

Yeah, me and the wife bring our two teenage boys to places as often as we can, which is pretty frequent. Definitely suppresses cash when we have four airplane seats to buy.

Hell, maybe we should leave their ungrateful souls at home a few times and take a nice trip overseas just us

I’m feeling inspired

Well, you are certainly doing it right and soaking up every minute with the Mrs.

Love that quote.

We've got Prague, Norway for the Northern Lights, and Stockholm planned for February. Nothing past that at the moment.

My stepmother‘s parents immigrated from Prague and gave birth to her here.

She regularly goes back to visit family and always comes back talking about it as if it’s the first time she’s been. You guys are going to love it!

For our last destination on this trip, we had three days in Zurich. While both Mrs. H2O and I have been to Switzerland before, this was our first trip to Zurich. We stayed in the Enge District, near District 1 and the Altstadt which made it very easy to get around and see the sights.

The weather was a bit warm for Zurich this time of year but felt great to us. We spent a majority of our time along the waterfront eating, drinking, and enjoying the atmosphere. We also checked out some museums during our stay.

During our stay in Zurich we decided to take a day trip over to Liechtenstein and check another country off of our list. While it isn't far away, getting to Liechtenstein can be complicated to to its limited connectivity. Ultimately we found an itinerary on an Austrian Railways RailJet train with a bus transfer at Buchs to get us there and back.

There isn't a ton to see and do here but we walked around the town for a couple of hours and had lunch before heading back to Zurich.
