Hi everyone.
We (me, SO, and 3 kids) are trying to plan a short trip to LA from ATL December 2-5. We would need 5 tickets. I just briefly researched ticket prices. My hesitation is that my mom has terminal brain cancer. She is ok right now, but I don't know how she will be in December. Any advice on how to get trip insurance or refundable tickets without paying big $$$?
Thanks for any help/advice.

Most flights offer refundable tickets for ~$15 extra. Normally, I never do it because the odds of me having to cancel and eat the cost of the ticket are so low that, in the long term I save money by not doing the $15 even if at some point I have to eat the cost once or twice. But in this situation, I would just do that. Going to end up costing you an extra $75 or so, but for a this situation it is worth it in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about your mom.

Book with southwest for your situation, you can cancel the tickets if you need to and use the credit you've already spent within a year of booking. Every other airline has a change fee of around $200

I just bought it.
Spent $2k on plane tickets for 6 of us. Insurance only cost $129 for all of us. Well worth it to me, knowing if there was some unforeseen event, even something like an illness, we wouldn't be out 2 grand.
