parisbymouth is a great resource for restaurants and the like. Really a big help.

Use the metro. Its really easy to use and convenient.

I personally liked staying in the left bank in the St Germain area, but that is a personal preference.

Unless you really want to see the catherdral (which IS really beautiful), I was not a big fan of Montmarte. It is sooooo full of tourist crap and scam artists.

Make reservations for the Eiffel, don't just show up. The area surrounding the Eiffel can also be a shite show with lots of immigrants and scammers.

Some restaurants I really enjoyed:

Spring
L'ami Jean
Septime
Le Chateaubriand

It really is a wonderful city. Love it.

Try to dress European, the parisians are extremely judgemental so you'll get better service if you don't look horribly American. Slacks, brown/ black shoes not tennis shoes, and a button down or polo.

The Metro-is it safe and what kind of price? Is there like a 5 day unlimited use card out there we can purchase?

If you decide to go the tower at night, I'd recommend going to the RUE CLER neighborhood (market area with bars and restaurants with outdoor seating). Then head to Fontaine De Mars which is between Rue Cler and the Tower. It is a very good restaurant that is not altogether expensive.

Versailles is a must. The Rodin museum is near Invalides, so you can do both in the same morning or afternoon. If you can play the timing right, go to the top of the arc at night when one of the Eiffel light shows happen. Pretty cool way to combine the two. Food tip: Filet Americain is probably not what you think it might be.

Yes the Metro is very safe.

There are a variety of ticket options.

You can purchase single ride tickets, or a pack of 10 called a carnet at a 20% discount, which is what I did.

You can purchase a single day unlimited if you think you're going to use it a lot, but you'll probably walk more than you think. You can also purchase a multiday unlimited.

Paris is an extremely walkable city. If you're staying in one of the inner districts, you'll want to walk most places.

Instead of Versailles (which is a site to see for sure but can be a clusterfrick), I would take a day trip out to Champagne.

Take the train from Paris to Reims in the champagne region, see the cathedral in Reims, and go to 2 or so Champagne Houses and do the tours (you must book in advance). It's really awesome.

If you drink, obviously.

Nice! I'll also be in Paris, but in 2 weeks - any recommendations for Catacombs? Didn't purchase tickets in advance and don't feel like paying 160E for me and wife for better guided tour. I've read the lines are very long all the time, is it worth it for the cheaper price of admission.

Metro from CDG is easy, but if you want to use the automated ticket machines make sure you know your credit card pin. I have a Visa card that does not add a foreign conversion fee like my AMEX does and therefore prefer to use my Visa when possible, but if you don't know your pin you're SOL.

Not sure how long you are there but exploring the parts of the city can be fun. We went to a huge antique market in a sketchy part of town that was interesting. not sure how safe that area is these days though. Parc des Buttes Chaumont was a nice surprise.

Monet's house and gardens at Giverny makes a nice side trip as well.

IS there a place to purchase a ticket with Euros for the Metro in CDG? I figure we would take that into the city closest to our hotel if we can.

Yes there will be a place to purchase tickets, there's one at basically every train stop and certainly at the airport. The airport will usually be extra though FYI, I don't know CDG prices but for 2 people it can sometimes be close to the same for a taxi/ Uber depending on where you are going.

As said, you can buy unlimited passes but often times you won't need that. You will just take it 2-4 times a day most days and that can often be cheaper to just pay by the trip. Given that, it's sometimes worth the extra euro or two a day to just buy the unlimited multi day pass and not have to worry or take the time to replenish.

Great advice-thanks! What about Euros-I see so far that it may be cheaper to change cash into Euros before I go, at least through my bank that is....any tips suggestions on that?

Some Wells Fargo branches keep foreign currency on hand, as do some AAA branches.

The Travelex ATM at my airport will dispense Euros, but not sure if it is a ripoff compared to the bank or AAA.

Paris is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world, don't stress they deal with asians, Africans, Indians, and Americans daily everywhere.

Absolutely no need to worry about money until you get there. I'd bring $250 or so in cash outside of your wallet as an emergency in case you lose your wallet. Outside of that, there will be tons of ATMs at the airport. There is usually a large ATM 'center' with 4-10 atms where everyone exits as most do this.Generally my first move off the airplane is to go to an ATM to get 400 euros, then grab my bags, then work on transport to the hotel.

The best exchange rates are almost always ATMs at your destination. Banks here may keep foreign money but they'll charge you a premium.
