We are traveling in August to Munich and then Vienna - the first weekend will be in Munich, the following weekend in Vienna. That will leave 4 days between those weekends to explore an area or two max between those two cities.

Anyone here have experience going to some of the smaller Bavarian towns? Would love to see some of the lake regions such as Konigssee and Berchtesgaden. Also considering wine regions along the Danube or Salzburg.

Thanks in advance.

Definitely Salzburg.

For the wine towns, my favorite area around there is the Wachau Valley between Salzburg and Vienna, more specifically between Melk and Vienna. It is gorgeous. The road runs along the Danube and it is the next best thing to a Danube cruise.

On the other side of Munich, there are some wonderful little medieval towns along the Romantic Road, the most prominent of which is Rothenburg. That is well worth a visit.

I think you can catch public bus from Salzburg train station up to hitlers eagle nest

I don’t know which I find more offensive. The hitler part or the public bus part.

Fieberbrunn, Austria

The Kehlstein Haus(Eagle's Nest) is nice to view the scenery surrounding Berchtesgaden and Salzburg. Koenigsee also makes for a nice day.

It’s not on the way from Munich to Vienna, but with 4 days driving, this definitely an option.

From Munich, head southwest to Neuschwanstein Castle. After a visit there, head towards Innsbruck. Depending on time, Garmich is a great town to stop in before Innsbruck. From Innsbruck, Salzburg is with a spot before you hit Vienna. Spend as many days as you want in these places.

This only works if you’re driving like we were. We didn’t have hotels booked. We just figured it out on the way. If that’s not the way you like to travel, I get it - don’t do it. But a road trip in this region is unforgettable.

I though Salzburg was nice enough not to take a day trip to Berchtesgaden. The market and castle were nice to walk through and there is this really awesome beer Garden in town with a ton of food.

Hallstatt is a gorgeous lake town high up in the mountains. I highly recommend taking the wife there. She will love the scenery and the small town feel. It's a couple hours from there to Vienna but the drive is incredible.

Vienna is one of those cities I could keep going back to over and over. enjoy

Vienna and Bratislava are the two closest capitals in the world. Less than one hour from Vienna central station via train, was a nice day trip.

Only the greatest bier garden in the world - Augustiner (not related to the Munich Augustiner). My favorite place in Salzburg. I was there in November and went every day it was open during our trip.

Are you with adults? Kids? I brought my family two years ago to salzburg and Bavaria for 7 nights 2 years ago and everyone had a blast. Some recs:

-Fussen (town for neuschwanstein) is likely going to be out of your way. I would recommend saving that for a different trip and looping it in with Garmisch/Grainau and the Zugspitze/Eibsee.

Munich rec's (maybe off the beaten path/list of regulars): go to hofbräukeller wiener platz. Awesome pretzel pizza, great less traveled beer garden in the east side of the river. Go to the manufactum store in munich. It is a buy if for life kind of stowe with something for everyone and has a really good cafe in the front. My sons wanted a croissant and the Bavarian ladies working insisted that a croissant deserved a free hot chocolate. They grind the chocolate fresh and whipped it up in a pretty memorable way. If with kids, also hit Hirschau im Englischen Garten (north of the Chinese tower). Great playground in the beer garden.

Just outside of munich, visit andechs monastery amd their beer hall. Great local beer there and very historic monastery. The lake nearby has some hiking options if you made it a day trip.

Berchtesgaden: do it, and get to the konigsee early (you can buy tickets in advance online). Salzburg is a 30ish minute drive, so you spend the night there. Other stuff in the area includes berchtesgaden sommerrodelbahn (luge thing on the slopes in summer) and the jennerbahn cable car (take it up, hike around some, enjoy beer and a view). You can also visit the salt mines.

Salzburg: definitely second augustiner beer garden (heaven is a place on earth), barrenwirt is a good restaurant, and so is Augustiner Braugasthof Krimpelstätter (right outside the gates of augustiner...if there in may/June the white asparagus will be featured and shouldn't be missed).

Around salzburg you should check out the salzkammergut (mountain towns/lakes to the east of salzburg). We didn't do Halstatt, and I don't really regret it. There is plenty of beauty around. Definitely take the schafberg cog train up to the top of the mountain for a view of the alps to the south and more hiking/beer. Go to traunsee and take the ferry around to see traunkirchen/schloss ort, and ebensee. St wolfgang is gorgeous too, and has a church from the sound of music.

If you can swing it, have a car for travel in austria. The area around Gosau/Vorderer Gosausee (lake) is gorgeous.

For the drive to vienna, I'll emphatically recommend driving to vienna via the wachau valley. If you are looking to train to vienna, go back out to the wachau via train (hour or so) to melk and rent a bike for the slow downhill ride to krems. My wife and I did the bike ride 7 years ago and it is one of our favorite memories. Lots of good spots to stop for wine/beer and the path puts you right near the waters cooler microclimate. Maybe a bit strenuous if you are out of shape.

In vienna, do the schonbrunn palace, zoo (if with kids), Glorieta, and enjoy an extended evening at a heuriger (wine garden). We like Weingut Feuerwehr Wagner but all will be a nice way to relax. Vienna restaurants: Zum Schwarzen Kameel, Restaurant Ofenloch, and Kolar Beisl - Kleeblattgasse.

Finally, if you plan by checking out YouTube, look at the nearfromhome channel. They are munich based and have a ton of pretty good videos on Bavaria and the area around salzburg.

Enjoy your trip! We are heading back this June and can't wait. It (bavaria/austrian tyrol/vienna) might be the most family friendly and outdoors accessible place on earth.

Lots of good Bavarian suggestions already, but I'll chime in too...

If you need a family activity in Munich, I cannot recommend Mike's Bike Tours enough. Provides a great orientation to the city with an historical perspective and some fun spots mixed in.

Also, don't miss the Augustiner Keller near the train station...the Braüstuben across the train tracks is a great indoor spot.

Other can't miss beer/food spots are the Viktualienmarkt garten (mostly locals) and a few places in the Englischergarten: Chinese Tower, Mini-Hofrauhaus, Seehaus & Aumeister (you can rent bikes and make an afternoon of hitting all these)

Foch, I feel like you plagiarized our last trip there in 2018 ...we hit Barenwirt for an early lunch and the Krimpelstatter spot as a pregame while we waited for the Bräustübl to open. As MAROON echoed earlier, it is the best biergarten in the world, or at least my favorite by far.

I do think Hallstatt is worth the trip, but only if you're staying the night (and one night is enough). We last went 12 years ago, and I'm sure it's overrun by tourists from the Far East by now. At night, you've got it all to yourself, and a dinner outside on the water at Bräugasthof is as scenic as it gets with the sun going down.

Any other questions Abita, please reach out...I still owe you for all the Boston & NE beer recs!

I should have added for Augustiner, you need euros. They don't accept cards. Make sure you bring some extra for a beer stein (the half liters with hinged lids make great gifts/momentos). At your local beer fest/oktoberfest someone will inevitably recognize augustiner and you get to relive the world's best biergarten for a bit in the conversation.

You could also drive the Grossglockner High Alpine Road if you have a car.

And visit Krimml Falls on the same day.
