Wife and I just booked Cancun again for July 4th weekend. We go 2 to 3 times a year to Cancun. Quick 2 hour flight from DFW. Travel advisories have never bothered me. Typically see plenty of police and military down in the resort area to help with safety. I don’t think they can really afford to lose tourism and even the cartel knows this. Just stay on resort grounds and relax.

Some people do and I support them.

It keeps the tourists away from the places we love to frequent in Mexico.

Plenty people do but plenty people also don't travel internationally to just sit at a resort.

Wife and I spent nearly two months in Tulum recently. Had an Airbnb and we had a fantastic time. The people were so, so friendly. Like any major US city, you're aware of your surroundings and stick to familiar areas. Honestly, I felt safer in Tulum than I do living in Chicago.

Just don't think the only takeaway here should be sticking to a resort.

Look, the cartel apologized. Don’t Haiti the player, Haiti the game.

Hopefully this makes Mexico cheaper. Still safer than parts of Louisiana.

we stayed at moon palace resort in January for a concert in event it was the first time for us at a big resort like that. Outside of the concerts I couldn’t wait to get out of there and go see the good shite. We spent two days in tulum and had a blast. This post is spot on I have never met more friendly people in one place in my life. One thing to remember especially about the Mexican coastal towns is that they are also vacation spots for...Mexicans LOL

My thoughts exactly. If I shell out for a trip outta the states I want to explore without a higher than normal probability of getting clapped. If I wanted to just stare at water and hang around the hotel I’d go to Florida.

I go to Mexico multiple times a year and rarely stay on a resort. Easy quick flight from DFW like you said. I've seen these advisories before but still went. I just stay aware of my surroundings, especially at night.

Honestly, I feel safer going to Mexico than going out in Deep Ellum.

We don’t go to Mexico, but I’ve always assumed people travel there because it’s cheap. I don’t know anyone that goes there when they can afford something better.

I go all the time, last couple New Years, we spent in Playa at a Secrets resort. I cross the Rio in S. Tx., same town for over 30 years, never had a problem.

I would be tempted to make fun of you, but that's just sad.

I've been to 42 countries, and Mexico is amazing. You probably only think about it terms of beaches and resorts, and there are all levels of options there, but there's so much more than that.

Mexico City is great, and I could show you some awesome things there, but let me introduce you, with a few of my photos, to an awesome city for a long weekend: Puebla.

The cathedral is impressive:

The city's historical center all dates back many hundreds of years. You can see buildings in Puebla that were built before the Pilgrims came to America. I don't have any pics from inside, but the oldest library in the Americas is very impressive. And lots of the historical center is well preserved.

One of the things that Puebla is famous for is its sweets. You should definitely try some camotes, a candy made from sweet potatoes that was invented in Puebla.

Speaking of food, Puebla also invented mole sauce. Did you know that mole sauce includes at least 23 different ingredients and takes hours to make? Oh, and it's amazing. Real Mexican cuisine is incredible and so much more than the Tex-Mex we typically think of as Mexican.

Puebla was also the site of the first shots of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, and you can see the home/museum where that happened.

While you're still in the historical center of the city, go see the home of one of the original conquistadores who invaded Mexico with Cortez.

Ready to get out of the historical center of Puebla? Take an Uber out to the Audi factory museum, where you can see some Audi race cars, but also a big selection of classic cars.

If you have another day, go out to Cholula and see the massive pyramid there.

My aunt married a wealthy man from Puebla. My uncle passed away years ago but my aunt and cousins still live there half the year. My cousin got married in that church from your pics. It was incredible. Her husband’s mom and sister are opera singers. They sang at his wedding. It was amazing. I actually cried a tear or two as they were singing it was so moving.

The perception of the majority of Americans of Mexico pretty much bears out the ugly American stereotype. Really sad. Oh well, their ignorance keeps things awesome for the rest of us. Oaxaca City blew my mind.
