Any tips on finding good gelato in Rome? Someone once told me to look for the gelato stored in a closed container.

That's like asking for recommendations on where to find a good pint of Guinness in Ireland.

Walk down the street. When you see some, buy some.

Most people will tell you Giolitti and Frigidarium and they are probably the most famous.

I prefer Il Gelato di San Crispino near the Trevi fountain. Be forewarned though they can go a little Seinfeld Soup Nazi on you if you try to put flavors together that they don't consider complimentary.

I also enjoyed Il Gelato di Claudio Torce, Fatamorgana, and Ciampini.

Also, this.

Skip the Metro except for going to Vatican city. It's an amazing place to walk and get lost. Plus the extra walking sheds the extra gelato calories.

We went to the one by the fountain. It was our favorite. But like what's been said... Anywhere is fine. It amazes me that it's all over the place there but they can't replicate it here. It's just not the same.

We just got back from Rome last week. We ate at Grom once (the place that had the closed lids) but our favorite was Giolitti's. They add homemade whip cream on top. We ate there every night in rome.

If you are using the bus to get around. GUARD YOUR PURSE/WALLET. My wife got pickpocketed it by a 7 year old girl on the bus, luckily I was able to catch her doing it and got our stuff back.

Went to Giolitti and enjoyed it. As others have said, if you see a place you like, stop and get some.

Go to frigidarium.
Definitely not generic, was recommended by a friend in the seminary over there

Last time I visited Rome, we stumbbled across Grom. It was pretty good. I will have to check out Giolitti's on this trip. Thanks for the advice.

We will try out Frigidarium on this visit. On our last trip we ate gelato once or twice a day.

In her defense (I'm assuming OP is a woman), the sheer fact there's so much gelato in Rome is precisely why it's so hard to find the really good stuff.

Oh I didn't mean it as an insult or anything, I was just trying to make the point that there's amazing gellato everywhere you look.

Second for Giolitti.

My most memorable moment in Rome was my wife and I having a nice wine buzz after dinner, seeing the Trevi Fountain, and walking to Giolitti for gelato.

Cant remember any of the names of gelato places but highly recommend going to a restaurant called Hostaria Romana. Amazing places, it was recommended to me by a local.
