What do you have?

Get a passport.

Get Global Entry.
Get with you phone carrier and talk about international options.
Don't over pack.
Depending on where you're going...know where the U.S. Embassy is and how to get there.
If the country doesn't speak great English...take a card for the hotel if the have them (so you can show Uber/taxi drivers).

Notify your bank/cardholder
Leave your itinerary with someone including hotel phone numbers
Get to the returning airport earlier than you think is necessary
Don’t cram too much into one trip

All very solid recommendations, esp last on printing motel/airbnb address before you fly.
Depending on where you going,
I will add remember you are a guest,
and never give papaya: which means dont be flashy american with lots of stuff to steal.

Be open minded about where you are going. Be respectful of the norms of the country and how you dress/act in public. Be open to getting off the beaten path, away from the tourist hotspots. Learn how to say Hello in the language.
Don’t drink tap water (depending on the country)
Don’t stress about bringing cash. ATM’s are usually around

Obtain and use a credit card with no international transaction fees (and try to pay in local currency when offered).

Global entry
Learn hello in that language
Portable charger
Wallet in front pocket or zipper
Cc with no international fees
Take picture of your passport, SS card, birth certificate
A few outfits in the carry on, in case bags don’t make it
If it feels sketchy, it is

If you need a taxi go to a taxi stand. Do not take a ride from a "taxi driver" that comes up to you on the street or at a bus or train station. They are gypsies. They cannot drop you off at a taxi stand and they will try to nickel and dime you once you're in the car.

This is why I go ahead and arrange airport pickup in advance. Might cost more but you won't get worn down by all the touts and so forth.
I'm not 22 with no money anymore.

Health insurance - if you're not covered outside US, buy some. The older you are, the more important it is. When buying the insurance read the details on medical evac very carefully.

Avoid temptation to say "Hey, we're only X hours from Paris". I.E. Don't try to cram multiple countries into the itinerary. Best to pick like one location, or at least one country generally, and just immerse yourself.
Give yourself WAY more time than you think for connecting flights. Between delays, customs etc., shite happens.
Avoid temptation to carry lots of stuff. I'm not a spartan type, but shoot for a nice carry on size bag and soft side personal bag (Like Osprey's 26+6). Some like to carry all on, some don't mind checking some stuff in.
Try to learn the language as best as possible. Even a few words goes a long way. Like Babble, or YouTube videos. I use an app (EverNote) and write down the phonetic sound of the word or phrase I learned.

Honestly, you need to clarify your ask by region. Certain things (travel ease, customs, do/don't do) will vary greatly by the country or region.

Eat and drink the local specialties.
When you pass a church, walk into it. Chances are you will find great works of art and architecture.
