Going to Playa del carmen next week and planning to take a day trip to Isla Mujeres. We plan on renting a golf cart when we arrive to tour the island and we know about the turtle farm, the lighthouse at punta sur, and of course will spend a lot of time at playa Norte. Is there any other can't miss things to see on the island while we drive around exploring?

Great idea to go and rent a cart. You can circumnavigate the island in 30 minutes. Just stop along the way and enjoy yourself. One of my favorite places on the planet. Real laid back.

Here are the links from the 2 IM threads in the sticky along with a recent IM thread on 4/27/17.

....here is a snippet from one that goes with the pics (whose URLs aren't working at the moment):
quote:

1. This little gem of a quaint getaway was more than we ever expected. The flight from Houston was convenient, the taxi to the ferry was easy and the ferry ride to IM was quick.

2. A few quick things: cash is king. And I mean it. More and more places are "cash only" for obvious reasons, but that philosophy is becoming more prevalent at many restaurants and excursion outfits. So bring cash, lots of it.

3. A golf cart is a great way to ride around the island, taking only about 1 hour to make the round-trip but only because we took our time stopping at roadside cafes, taking photos and checking out some quiet beaches...and any other thing/place that looked appealing like that cemetery.

4. Playe Norte is a great place to hangout during the day, although it seems the folks in Cancun are catching on to this beautiful place...there are often boats anchored just off the shore with house music blaring from the cabin. This was only an "issue" on Saturdays.

5. Hidalgo Street - the main drag closed to cars. Tons of sidewalk cafes and shops, a great place to people watch at nighttime.

6. We stayed at Na Balam hotel, it was the PERFECT location on the north end of the island. The water was like glass, was very shallow for 200+ yards out and full of fish. Would highly recommend staying here!

7. We went to the "marina" and negotiated a private 6-hour fishing and snorkeling trip for $200. We caught tons of barracuda, came back and had ceviche and grilled fish on the beach...all included.

TIP -- get a golf cart that is gas-powered and has a full tank when you rent it. We passed by a few stopped carts during the week we were there and each time their battery-powered golf cart had lost its charge.

Here are some things to check out for your trip, all can easily be accessed by golf cart.
