What would say are the world’s five greatest mountains (in order) based on factors like size / height, aesthetic beauty, uniqueness, fame, historical significance?

Matterhorn

Is my list also. Maybe substitute Mt St Helens with One of them if asking US population based on name recognition.

Honorable mention would be Pilkes Peak. Ask 100 people in Louisiana to name a mountain in the western US and 95 would say Pikes Peak.

What about K2? It's the Holy Grail of Mountaineering.

I thought about K2 but it's undervalued. Most people probably haven't heard of it.

I will give you the top 5 I have been to- 1. The Matterhorn. A thread last week asked about the best views we had ever experienced. My answer was standing on the Klein Matterhorn and staring at the Matterhorn and looking down at the snow covered Alps. ...... 2. Mt.McKinley (Denali) We were lucky enough to be in the Denali Park on a clear day and had a good view of the mountain.....3. Italian Dolomites. This is a range, not one mountain, but the scenery is spectacular.......4.The mountains near Lucerne , Switzerland, including Mt. Rigi, Mt. Titlis and Mt Pilatis......5. I have been to Pikes Peak. I will make that #5...............Edit........Based upon the discussions below, I will add two to my list. First is Vesuvius. I forgot about that one. I saw it from Pomoeii. Honorable mention will be the Jungfrau. I was in Interlaken but couldn't see the Jungfrau because of the fog and clouds.

No, we did not go to Lauterbrunnen. We went to Bern and Interlacken. The big attraction in Interlacken is the Jungfrau. The reason I didn't list it in my top 5 was because the day we were there it was cloudy and foggy and we couldn't see it.

Monte Fitz Roy in Patagonia, to me seems like the most dominating majestic mountain.
Like an 11,00 foot rocket ready to take off.
On my bucket list, fo'sho'

That's a really good list and I would not change any.

Contenders to round out a top 10:

K2 - Pakistan/India
Cotopaxi - Ecuador
Chimborazo - Ecuador
Mauna Loa - Hawaii
Mt. Cook - New Zealand
Mt. Blanc - France
Ayers Rock - Australia
Popocatepetal - Mexico
Half Dome - Yosemite
Mt. Rainier - Washington
Mount Oylmpus - Greece

I’ve always been partial to the Eiger. That north face is such a taunting climb

Mt Hood in Oregon hasn't gotten any love, and it is underrated. It's not as large as some others, but it's symmetry and isolation, with no other mountains around it makes it stand out.

Keep in mind, the mountain is 70 miles away from Portland, where this photo was taken.

I don't think you can name 5 and leave out the Andes mountains. Under appreciated, but bigger than anything in North America.

Mt Hood is a good one. When you’re flying into Portland on a clear day and look out the window and see Mt Hood it is very impressive.
