Tell me about Charleston

Where to stay? What to do? Wife and I are trying to figure out cool things to do with the family. Wild Dunes? Mt. Pleasant? Goat Island? Sullivan's Isalnd? We need feedback from those who have done this without getting sucked in by the internet. Thanks.

Capital of WV. They make a mean chew bar.

Do not pass go on Sullivan's Island until you eat at the Obstinate Daughter.
Charleston is a cool place. Just walk around and eat drink and be merry. We stayed at the market pavilion and enjoyed it.

If you've never been and can make it work, I'd suggest doing a long weekend in Charleston with just the wife and sticking to Charleston proper.
Nothing against family trips, but it seems like tackling it as a couple the first time would be most enjoyable.

I've never been and we are in the food scene. Already looking to eat at Husk and other spots that was in Top Chef. We've found some spots on the beach but have been told to spend more to avoid the college spring break scene.

What do you like to do? What are you looking for on the trip? We go yearly typically for our anniversary...will be back the first week in April.
For a first timer, I would say do Ft Sumter, one of the plantations (Magnolia is our favorite), walk the Battery and tour one of the houses down there.
After you do those, check out the ships at Patriots Point, go to Drayton Hall and make the drive out to John's Island and Wasawbaw to see the Angel Oak and the Tea plantation.
We stay at Isle of Palms for the beach. We stay near the pier, but the rental agency we use (Island Realty) also handles Wild Dunes. The staff is excellent, prices are great, never had a problem. We have eaten at the Wild Dunes marina before, and driving through it looked really nice.
There have been several threads on this board over the last few months about Charleston with lots of good info. I know I have posted in two or three. I'm on my phone or else I would link. Search my post history to find them.

In all fairness, the search function is one of the worst on the entire internet.
Back on point, when are you going?
If you go during baseball season, go to a Riverdogs game and hit up the food at the game.

We rented a beach house at Folly Beach, about 15 miles to downtown Charleston. Folly is a quiet beach area and my brother, who lives in, SC said it is where the old hippies ended up.
ETA We really enjoyed our stay and plan to return.

Stay at the Vendue Hotel. Eat at SNOB, FIG and the Peninsula Grill. Go to Ft. Sumpter. Great city to just spend hours walking the streets. It is a great restaurant city. When I travel, I judge a restaurant by whether I would go there if it were in New Orleans. They are many restaurants in Charleston that meet that criteria. It reminds me of a clean, safe and much less exciting version of New Orleans.

It's nice to visit for a couple of days. I found myself getting antsy after a while though. You need to go in with the mindset to relax it take it slow. Not necessarily my type of thing, but some people enjoy it.

Wife, kids and myself just looking forward to relax on the beach and eat some great food. Sounds like a perfect spot for us. Thanks for the info all.

Head south to Kiawah or Seabrook if you can. It's a short (45 minute or so) beautiful drive.

Here now. Staying at the Dewberry...so far we've eaten at The Darling Oyster Bar, Obstinate Daughter and PIE Bake Shoppe. Dinner at FIG tonight and Husk tomorrow night. Food so far has been great.
Took a car out to Ft. Moultrie today and walked along the beach on Sullivan's island. Did quite a bit of damage to the wallet on King Street.
City Market and Rainbow Row/home tours tomorrow.
Charleston is beautiful but no one seems to get in a hurry to do anything around here.

I am in the process of deciding between a trip to Charleston or Nashville. It will be just my wife and I looking for good food, drinks, and history/architecture. Charleston seems right up our alley but being from New Orleans, we are afraid it won't be anything new or different.
Is this true or is Charleston different enough that we will enjoy the four to five days we spend there?

Nashville is a great city, but if you are looking for history/architecture, I would say Charleston is what you are looking for.
You will certainly find things in Charleston that are similar to NOLA, but the differences are enough that I think you will be happy with the trip.
From the history aspect, as I said earlier in the post, be sure to go to Fort Sumter, and also check out Fort Moultrie as well. If you are in town over a weekend, go see the Hundley - this is a piece of Civil War history that you can't find anywhere else. If you are into military history, the ships at Patriots Point are a good thing to visit as well - very few places allow you to tour an aircraft carrier.
From the architectural side, be sure to go to Drayton Hall. Built in the 1750s, it is the only plantation house in the Charleston metro area to survive the Civil War. The most "recent" renovations were done in the mid-1800s and there is still no indoor plumbing or electricity. The houses at Boone Hall, Magnolia and Middleton are not original and were all built after the Civil War, but the architecture is still worth looking at. If you are there in the spring, the gardens are beautiful. Magnolia's collection of azaleas and camellias is absolutely amazing.
The houses along the Battery at the tip of the peninsula have amazing architecture as well, and several of them are open for tours.
Being from NOLA, I think you will like low country cuisine. It will be similar, with shrimp and crab, to what you find in Louisiana but different enough to not seem the same.

Great info. Also, not to hijack but we will be going in early December. Does anyone know if Charleston dresses up nicely for Christmas time?

Yes, extremely nice. I'm from Charleston and still reside here (moved away several times but the city always draws me back).
To the Auburn poster that mentioned only 1 plantation house in the metro area... that is flat out wrong. I can think of at least 8 within 15 miles of the peninsula. If this is your thing, just reply and I'll list them out.
Check out CofC's campus also. 13th oldest college in the nation and founded in 1770 (obviously prior to the US). And I'd put the city of Charleston as having the hottest per capita girl situation in the US (hell the city has been ranked that twice in the last 5 years).

Ill be a second to recommend Folly if you want to stay at a beach. Sleepy hippy beach and if you aren't by the pier you can be decently secluded. Pretty decent food options out there for the times when you don't go into the city.
The city is great. The market, the FOOD, etc. If you have kids, I would even suggest a horse drawn tour. It is corny, but they provide a ton of really cool info about the city, and I would say it is worth doing.
