Going in late February.

about to buy lift tickets. is there any opportunity to buy cheaper elsewhere? or just buy directly from the resort. we are aiming for Heavenly.

Is there another resort that we MUST check out that is easy driving distance from South Lake Tahoe?

thanks!

IMO the whole lake is driveable.

Stayed at Heavenly for a few days, and on one day drove to Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, which is on the northwest side of the lake. It took about 1.5 hours but is worth it if you want to check out different terrain or see Olympic Village. The 1960 Olympics were held at Squaw Valley, and it is the second-largest Lake Tahoe resort (Heavenly is first). It is joined with Alpine Meadows.

I guess it depends on how many ski days you have. Heavenly is awesome with the casinos and stuff right there at the Nevada line, so I wouldn't go out of your way to go to another resort unless you have time to kill.

Also, just driving around the lake is worth it. Very scenic and good photograph opportunities.

Heavenly is solid. Tickets are ridiculously priced...you should probably buy from the resort, but buy ahead of time. And your Heavenly tickets are good at Northstar and Kirkwood as well, which are fairly close. I haven't been to those resorts but I think they are less than an hour away.

Heavenly is my home mountain..driving around could be really easy or not an option. Been getting crushed up there lately and some roads have been completely closed (including I80).
If you really want to go to multiple mountains, I would suggest Kirkwood...could require 4x4 or chains to get to though.

Go to Kirkwood. Buying online in advance for heavenly, North Star and Kirkwood is the cheapest option. However be prepared if a storm is coming through for their to be wind holds on the lifts and sometimes the resort may never open due to the winds. We lost a day on our last trip there as none of the resorts on either side opened due to the winds. I believe several places were closed 2-3 days in a row earlier this week

I have been to North Star and Squaw. Stayed on the north shore by the state line casinos. Some days were easy driving and other not drivable for a South Louisiana driver. Beautiful area.

Check out Homewood, pretty solid place. Not a fan of heavenly. Normally icy, wind is always shutting down the gondola. I prefer northstar. Kirkwood is pretty nice as well.

Didn't do any skiing this trip (leaving for winter park in the morning), but was there for new years eve and several days after... lucky to get out without 4wd after the pelting they got. Snow chains got us out, but it was not a fun drive to carson city. Sorry no ski review, but i feel this could be useful info.
