Anyone have any experience flying with a self defense mechanism like mace or a taser into Mexico? Are these legal to bring there in any capacity or is this an absolute no go?

I would be double certain, not just “some dude on TD said it was OK”, before I took anything there. I know people who have spent time in jail down there for a random shotgun shell under a truck seat. They don’t frick around with the Gringos, they can and will toss you in La Carcel.

A) Unless you go looking for trouble you won't encounter it, like any city in the US or anywhere in the world, and
B) If someone is trying to kidnap/harm/threaten you, your little mace isn't stopping armed cartel members.

Why do you feel you need to bring something like that? You planning to be visiting the remote cartel compounds?

Mace doesn't work well against an AK47, I dont have personal experience but its common sense.

If you're that worried, why go?

Agreed. This seems like paranoia to me.

I have no idea about the legality of it, but it has never crossed my mind to try and fly anywhere with something like that. Just seems like you'd be asking for trouble.

My girlfriend is going on a bachelorette trip and has been getting more and more nervous about it all week. I personally think she’ll be alright but if bringing or having it on her made it feel more comfortable then I would be all for it.

She spending the weekend in Juarez or an all-inclusive resort

If the latter, then she's safer there than most places in the States.

She can be nervous all she wants but she’s not getting on a plane w/mace or a taser in her luggage. If she’s going to an all inclusive she’ll be fine. If she’s that scared don’t go

Juarez

Honestly isn't that bad. The police have really stepped up, and the murder rate is about the same as NOLA. Most of the cartel activity has moved more to Tijuana. I have been to Juarez a good bit and honestly haven't ever felt sketched out (granted always with locals who know the bad areas).

This.

Does your lady still live at home with her parents? Seems like an immature and naïve question to ask.

Yes, you can bring mace in your checked baggage: LINK

And Tasers, too: LINK

This applies to US domestic flights. I have no idea if you can bring these through a Mexican airport checkpoint.
