Seems like the internet likes this area. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

When I was planning a trip there (that got cancelled), this is what I was told by a few friends that had been. Also, as you said, all internet fingers point there as well.

Gas Lamp is kind of touristy
You definitely want to stay in that general area though.
Better meals are elsewhere though.

I'm not too sure about Glasslamp, but Gaslamp is pretty cool. It's a good area to hit the bars.

This, but I prefer PB (Pacific Beach) to Mission, but if you have $$$$, Coranado or La Jolla.

Coranado for my conference, then hanging a few days. Want to hop over to downtown. Sucks, but the Padres will be on the east coast. I might drive up to Venice Beach. Never been to Southern California, just northern.

Venice Beach was really disappointing. Lots of gangster Mexicans. Nothing but "medicinal" weed centers.

Snorkeling with the leopard sharks in La Jolla is awesome. Also kayaking in the caves there. Petco Park for a Padres game would be great as well but you said they are out of town. The zoo is some serious uphill walking. Not my cup of tea. See Balboa Park if you've got the time.

Stayed at the Grant, right in front of the gas lamp. I would highly recommend. great area.

Have friends in both mission beach and PB, both are great, but as a tourist, I'd rather stay in the gas lamp area
