Train. Figure out a way to do it this way. Trains in Italy are very nice and quick!

I drove from Tuscany to Sorrento (with a stop in a family-specific little town on the way). Drove a little in and around Sorrento including a day trip to Positano. Then drove from Sorrento to Rome to return car and fly home.

Easy drive until you get to about Naples. From there, the driving is tough. I needed a car from Tuscan for stop on the way and because of AirBNB location. If I had to do it over again, would have returned car to Naples and shuttled around Amalfi and taken train to Rome. Some of my party took trail from Sorrento to Rome with no issues.

What is a good website to book train and private driver

We had a driver drive us from Rome to Positano. One of those MB Sprinter Vans. Leaving we had the driver take us to Pompei on the way back.
In Positano we rented a Gaza boat with a captain for two days. It was like 8 hours each day. Day one we went down the coast swimming, visiting different towns, had lunch, toured caves. The second day we did about the same but we went to Capri. The boat with the captain was our favorite part. Shaded boat, padded bow, tons of wine. It was just the four of us and our boat captain Marco for two days.

I would imagine that a private driver from Rome to Positano would be very expensive. If this is not an issue, then by all means do that.

The train from Rome to Naples is pretty cheap, and the private driver from Naples to Positano cost us about $90 before tip, probably a little more now. That worked out fine.

The transferelax.com link I posted above didn't work but it is still there, complete with beautiful pictures of the Amalfi Coast. Just google it.

The only private driver we are doing in September is from Milan to Treviso the day we land. The train goes through Venice with a change of trains. We’re going to be wiped out as traveling east is much harder on us. It will be reassuring to just have a driver that picks us up at the airport and deposits us at our hotel in Treviso. Other than that it’s trains and car rentals.

This is what I would do.
We used Amalfi coast transfers company that drove us from Naples to Positano and then Ravelllo back to Naples airport. No way I would drive in Naples or the coast. Once on the coast the ferry is the best way to get around.

Side note: Positano is terrible if you have a child in a stroller.

It all depends. At the time I was traveling with my wife (no pics) and two 13 year old girls (no pics). I don’t think it was expensive. Maybe 150 Euros. I didn’t want to get off a 10 hour flight and then try and figure out transportation.

Don’t bring a stroller to Positano. It’s a horrible idea. Let’s start with why the hell you bringing kids to Positano. Take the brats to Disney World.

It was 2019 and I forget what it cost, but it wasn’t too much because I would remember it had it been super high. I’m thinking it was like $200 after tip.
I was traveling with my wife and two 13 year old girls. The plane landed at like 8am Rome time. I was thinking after a long flight, I didn’t want the hassle of getting us and the luggage to the train station, on the train and then from the other train station to Positano.
Getting off the plane and meeting the baw with your name on a sign was well worth it.

Highly recommend a boat charter. We did that for a day. We left out of Nerano and went up to Minori and back. Several stops for swimming and lunch in Conca dei Marini. Granted, this was the middle of high season, but Positano and Amalfi were incredibly crowded. We didn't even try to dock at either. It was much better to see them from the water.

It's just me, but I'd have zero desire to take a 7 month old to one of those towns. I understand that the trip is already planned for Greece and then Italy on the back end, but those are just not places that are conducive for children that young, imo.

All the people with kids there (under 10 or so) looked absolutely miserable.

Hahaha I’ll let you know what level of miserable we reach. We are staying in Maiori, supposedly that is the most family friendly of all the towns on the Amalfi Coast. We have one child with us.

fast train from rome to naples. Then slow train to Pompeii and Almafi Coast. that is what I did. Worked out easy and you have room to walk with that baby.

Fast train was around 2 hrs
from Naples to Sorrento (didnt stop at Pompeii) was around 1.5 hrs)

I've heard the train from Naples to Sorrento can be somewhat unreliable, but I've never done, so that's only what I've heard.

We had a driver pick us up in an 8 person van from Naples and drove us to Masa Lubrense(past Sorrento), and it was about an hour and a half. I think we paid 130 euros. If not, it was close to that. If you take the train, then you have to get to Maiori from Sorrento. Depending on the time of day, that's another probably 2 hours, if not more.

If you get a van from Naples to Maiori you can probably cut off all of the Amalfi drive and save a lot of time. Maybe the idea is to have that drive in, but fwiw, when traffic was bad, it took almost 30 minutes just to get to our place from Sorrento and that was only about 7 miles and toward the end of the peninsula, where it was much quieter.

Just throwing it out there that you could probably cut off a lot of time by driving straight there from Naples.

Omio.com for train reservations. I used them for our travel all around Italy last month.

Do you happen to still know the person/company y’all used and their contact? Looking to do the same.

Rome to Pompeii Get Your Guide

It’s doable but it’s a 12 hour day even taking the high speed train. Driving is no bueno.
