I bought one and then didn't use it. I had planned enough and once I saw everything I wanted I lived like a local

Yes they are worth it. I have many of them. I find them more readable and less encyclopedic than some of the others. He gives good practical advice on the major attractions and how to plan your time. If you are looking for gourmet food and luxurious accommodations, don't take his restaurant and hotel advice. He likes to go on the cheap. I also like the Michelin Green Guides and the D&K guides. Fodor's and Frommer's have good information, but you don't have to buy the books. All of the info contained in their books is available for free on their web sites.

Get them for his walking tours advice and practical tips.
For example his tip to go in a certain way at Mt. st. Michel in France helped us avoid crowds was worth the price alone.

What I have found to be far more valuable are his free walking tours overseas.
Go to podcast app-> search rick steves tour (insert city) -> download podcast so that you don't have to tap data abroad ->find corresponding .pdf walking map file by searching on google ->download to ibooks
Doing the above and throwing two pairs of headphones in my wifes purse has been pretty great. No waiting on tour lines, skip what you don't want, and most importantly its free.

From what I have heard, absolutely worth it. I bought his one on European cruise ports when I thought I was going on a Baltic Cruise and I could tell immediately how useful it would be. I didn't end up going on the cruise but will some day so I will get to use it then.

We have at least a dozen of them. Totally worth it.
