Question about Spirit Airlines.

I've never rode on a Spirit Airline before, so I figured I would ask you travel experts on here. But what do you guys think of it? Is it any good? Me and a friend are flying to Boston next month on Spirit Airlines and some of my other friends have only said bad things about it. A couple of them have said that Spirit had cancelled their booked flights a day before they were supposed to leave for no reason, and that Spirit was the worst. I don't know if I believe that or not, but not too many people I've spoken to have said good things about it. What do you think about Spirit?

First- Could have searched this since this is a weekly thread
Second- I use them to fly between New Orleans and Dallas (20+ times) and I've never had a late fly or cancelation.
Third- Know what you are getting into, have the app for boarding passes, know that any bags outside of a booksack will cost you, and you have to pay for everything.
Fourth- There is not a lot of room between the seats so if you are a large person you will be uncomfortable.

I flew my family of 3 round trip from NOLA to Cleveland on a Spirit non-stop with no problems for 196$ ...total.
3 tickets to a Cavs playoff game cost more!
I would not fly them all the time but it made sense on this trip and the schedule we had.

I flew it because of a funeral and had to buy tickets last minute.
It’s cheap, but know, you’re buying only a seat on a plane. A seat they’ll assign at check in.
Check a bag? On my flight they said it was $32 online when you book, $45ish after booking, $50ish at check in, $100 at the gate. Carry on was even more.
No free drinks, no real customer service at all. You get what you pay for, and it’s a tiny seat around a pretty trashy clientele, at least in my one experience.
It’s cheap, but know, you’re buying only a seat on a plane. A seat they’ll assign at check in.

Yeah only reason I'm flying it is because my friend got them for me, and he's the biggest cheap arse on the planet, so I'm sure this will be an interesting experience.

It is a price-oriented airline PERIOD.
I only use it if the price is so ridiculously low AND on a relatively short trip.
I fly SW and with a little planning it is pretty close to Spirit IF you bring suitcases. (checked in)

I may be misinterpreting your post, but what do you mean "a seat they'll assign at check-in"? I've always paid for a, specific, seat.

Seats are uncomfortable and legroom isn't much, which is why I will only fly Spirit for short hops (i.e. ORD -> MSP).
Your experience will be fine as long as you don't set high expectations.

I'm flying them for the first time with low expectations to Chicago from N.O. I plan on only bringing a back pack and boarding with a water, snack, and movie on my phone. I think that should take care of everything. I'm sitting in a regular seat on the way there and their Front Big Seat on the way back to compare for future trips. I will report back here after the trip.

Seat selection is an extra cost.
The bare bones fare that is cheap includes only a seat which could be anywhere on the plane. Specific seat selection costs extra.
They market it as a ticket to get you from A to B and nothing else.

Ah, I see. I guess I have never noticed the skip seat selection icon. I end up forking over the $9, which is the typical cost for ORD <-> MSP.

Everything is an extra and the seats are not particularly comfortable as they don't recline but for a short haul, where you are traveling light, it's ok.
Just make sure you compare flight costs after you've chosen everything. It could end up being the same or more than another, more comfortable airline.

My wife and I flew from MSY to Boston a couple weeks ago. She booked the flight and was being frugal but I was skeptical because of the horror stories. The only complaint I have is the seats aren’t that comfortable and not much room. She did pay extra to pick our seats and to bypass regular security or something to that effect. The clientele going through security was what I imagined but that didn’t necessarily carry over to the people on our plane. I guess Boston isn’t at top of their places to go.
It was a fairly new plane (Airbus) and the crew was friendly and courteous. I had a couple of double Tito’s and cranberry that made it more tolerable. I was also on a knee scooter since I just had foot surgery so they pulled me out of line to board with the first group. They took my scooter when I was getting on the plane and had it ready for me at the door when we got off the plane. All in all, not too bad but like others have said, it’s not luxury by any means and it’s cheap so lower your expectations.

when you make the reservations/purchase online there is usually a chart w seats available.
one of the color (can't remember which -imply- no surcharge)
others will show the corresponding surcharge
...but you can select your seats online.
