I will be attending a wedding next month in Cancun and decided to extend our trip a few days and go down to Playa Del Carmen.
Any recommendations on places to stay? open to all inclusive or not

We use condo hotels properties often. Just google "condo hotels playa Del Carmen". El faro is in a good location in the middle of playa. Grand Velas is very nice for an AI. Had family who loved Mayakoba.

I just got back from Playa Del Carmen and stayed at the Paradisus La Perla. All around I had a fantastic experience and would do it again. I've never stayed at another all inclusive so I don't have a comparison, but for the money I really enjoyed it.
One absolute must is paying for the Roayl Service, which is VIP with a private butler. I never really even needed the butler, but you got a private pool and section of the resort which made it all worth it. I was there 5 nights and don't think I saw a single kid.

So, It has been roughly 16 years since I've been but what my family did was really great.
Did Playa Del Carmen as "home base"
Did Cozumel one day (short ferry ride"
Cancun one day... briefly.. wasn't impressed but neat to see
But the fun day was renting a jeep and traveling south to see Tulum. On the way we stopped somewhere near Xel Ha and ate at some burger joint on the beach that had manatees swimming around (I'll find out the name from my dad , and report back)
And Telum was fantastic! The ruins were huge and right on the ocean.

Playa has really grown up in the past 16 years.
