A pass is your ticket to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. Each pass covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife refuges as well as standard amenity fees (day use fees) at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A pass covers entrance, standard amenity fees and day use fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person). Children age 15 or under are admitted free.
I got my pass at a National Forest office
Best to call ahead and check if they have passes in stock.
Site location link for all states and phone numbers under intro paragraph.
$80.00 annual pass
Military: Free pass
Age 62: $10.00 lifetime pass. Congress may vote to increase this to $80.00.

Got ours at Rocky Mountain National Park entrance last summer. It is definitely worth it. We used it at Mt Evans as well in Colorado.
Will use at Acadia National Park in Maine this summer and possibly more.

The U.K. has an equivalent "Heritage Pass" for overseas visitors (think: US Citizens) that is valid for 9 or 16 consecutive days.
If you are going to be touring the countryside there (England) and historical sites are on your agenda, it's the way to go.

This isn't new. I've been getting them for 6 years now. My current one expires in August.
