Planning a trip to Egypt in Sept. any input?

I have heard there is trash everywhere and all the other stuff, but I have always wanted to go and have been fascinated with it my whole life.
It's dirt cheap with hotel and airfare for a week being $1,500, so I am looking for anyone that has been in the last year or two to give me their experiences.
I know it's a place you do the tourist trap things and only them, no wondering off the beaten path, my feeling at this point is if they get me then they get me and it's the same way I felt after 911.
I kick myself for not going in the early 90's when I was stationed in Bahrain and Sicily.

Cairo is dirty. Let us know how it is. I want to do a lot of Egypt but I worry about the muslim countries these days.

Be prepared for militarized police. My friends that went said there's a very high police presence but they loved their trip. I've heard great things but most people I know all went pre Arab spring. Like anywhere, if you're smart about where/when you go places you should enjoy. It's on my bucket list so report back.

When I went I flew down to south to see abu simbel, it was impressive. Then we road up the Nile to Cairo stopping at cities like Luxor along the way. I'd recommend using a tour group. The constant bargaining would have killed the trip for me, luckily the tour group handles most of that. The Pyramids are cool, got to climb up one of them from the inside, there are limited daily tickets for that. Hot air balloons ride to the valley of kings was cool. Alexandria was good but not a must. Finished off at Sharm el Sheik and did some diving in the Red Sea. Overall it was a great trip. It is dirty, very poor and the language barrier is big in non-tourist towns. Luckily tourism is a huge industry there so most places were very accommodating.

What tour group did you use?

I did the main tour with contiki. They are a fun and cheap tour company if you are under 35. Then I booked excursions to Alexandria and Sharm el Sheik separately.

I've looked at Contiki before but figured it was more of an under 30 deal. I'm 34 now so I may want something different.

I've done Contiki in Europe and Egypt. The crowd is generally mid 20s but have had some in 30s both times. During the day they hit all of the landmarks and do a good job of giving you some history. In Europe, they would take you out to clubs and shows each night but you could always opt to go your own way. In Eqypt there were no clubs, but we did get to have some drinks on the train and boats. Best part of contikin was meeting people from around the world. I've travelled to other countries and have stayed entirely at the houses of people I met on tour. I've also had some come to Louisiana and got to show them around.
